Haha, this is for Stephani. Why? Because basically she came up with Kevin as a firefighter. Which spawned this fic.
Oh yeah, it's hot.
Enjoy! Love ya Stephani!
Prologue
“Yo Jonas, house call on 45th and Oak. Cat in a tree, you got it?” Kevin rolled his eyes at another jibe he had to endure on his shift at the Brookvale Fire Station. He knew very well that there were no trees on 45th and Oak, it being the location of the local Wal-Mart. He was the rookie, fresh from training and eager to see firsthand what his job entailed, much to the amusement of the more experienced firefighters.
Instead of acknowledging the jibe, he chose to walk to the truck and make sure everything was in order when a real call was made. He checked all the important gauges, even wiped a smudge off one of them with his uniform sleeve. When he was satisfied that everything was in working order, he walked back upstairs to the staff room.
“Hey man, don’t let the old guys get you down,” Jimmy Reynolds said, piling his plate with food. He was the rookie before Kevin passed his certification tests, and the only friend Kevin had made yet. His sandy blonde hair was cut in a military style, and Kevin knew it was because his family was involved in the various military divisions except for him. “Those old men don’t know anything about you so just ignore them. After your first big fire they’ll leave you alone.”
Kevin’s hazel eyes expressed his appreciation for Jimmy’s friendship, and he pushed away the curl that always seemed to fall; a ringlet that was exactly like the other ones that topped his head, only slightly more stubborn.
Grinning, he realized Jimmy was right, and grabbed a paper plate to get something to eat. He’d just bit into his sandwich when the bell rang, signaling a call. A second bell rang, letting them know it was serious.
Kevin’s heart pounded in his chest as the adrenaline began to rush through his body. He grabbed his helmet and shoved it on his head, briefly checked to make sure he had what he needed, and slid down the metal pole that brought him to the truck. He hopped on and it raced towards the downtown area, where the smoke could clearly be seen, hovering overhead, huge puffs of gray and black.
Kevin knew this was his chance to prove himself; to be the fireman he knew he had the ability to be.
