Winning Desire
Prologue
Just hours before, she was standing on stage clutching a microphone as cameras recorded her every move, broadcasting them to millions of homes across the country. She flashed back to the moment causing her to lie awake: “Join us again tomorrow night as we find out which two finalists will be competing head-to-head next week in the finale, where we will crown your new American Idol.” She could still hear the screams from the numerous fans she made in just 14 short weeks on the show. Thoughts of her parents seated in the audience caused her to sigh deeply into her pillow before turning out the light. She always tried her best, never wanting to let them down.
The moon shone brightly through the sheer curtains, casting a shadow onto her face. She took the judges criticism and compliments with great stride that evening, always handling herself with poise and grace, unlike her rival. She was not afraid to speak her mind to the judges, something that wasn’t always accepted well with the American public. You either loved her, or hated her. There was no in between.
Before she drifted off to sleep, Erin thanked God for the wonderful opportunity presented upon her. She was grateful that America had taken a liking to her and continued to vote for her to stay in the competition. She only hoped that this week’s performance was enough to get her into the finals.
Joe rushed off stage, headed straight for the bus. His thoughts weren’t on his own performance tonight, but on hers. He hoped that it was enough to secure her a spot in the finale. He climbed into his bunk, grabbing the remote and pushing play on his TiVo. Fast forwarding through the commentary and commercials, the contestant’s faces filled his TV. Once again, he progressed through the other performances until Erin appeared on stage.
He became entranced by her voice, convinced that an angel was singing. A smile plastered his face as she continued through the song, hitting every note perfectly. When it was time for the judges’ remarks, he found himself not paying attention to what they were saying but more to the beautiful girl standing before them.
He checked his watch. An hour and a half remained before the voting lines closed. Pulling out his cell phone, he began dialing the familiar number, hitting send. Busy signals filled his phone most of the time, but 36 votes were cast, leaving him to feel content about her future on the show.
After setting the TiVo to record the results show the following night, Joe prepared himself for bed. He couldn’t tell if she would be safe from elimination, but one thing he was sure of; he had to meet this girl.
