Chapter 2
“Um, Alana? Do you know there’s a guy following you?” Julia asked bewildered. Alana could understand why she was a little confused, she would have been too if she saw a random guy following Julia out of a sunflower field.
“Oh my gosh, where?” Alana said, earning a glare from Julia as she laughed and kept walking. She glanced over to the guy and he chuckled.
“Well, could you at least explain who he is or what’s going on?” she asked quietly catching up to Alana and the guy. Then, it hit Alana that she hadn’t even introduced herself at all or even asked what his name was.
“Um, yeah, about that, uh, you kind of reminded me that I haven’t introduced myself at all once you mentioned that,” Alana told her, almost in a whisper.
“That’s okay, I’m in the same boat with you. That’s what happens when something as unusual as this happens,” the guy replied. Alana and Julia looked at him oddly not knowing he could understand their muted conversation. Soon, they swiped away the look and replaced with a nod and smiled.
“I’m Kevin.” He stuck his hand out towards Alana and she gently took it. His eyes gleamed as he gave her a friendly grin.
“I’m Alana,” she replied smiling at him and then returning her glance back to the ground to watch where she was stepping through the grass.
“And I’m Julia,” Julia chimed, poking her hand across Alana to Kevin. He shook it and nodded to her in response.
“It’s nice to meet you both,” Kevin said as they walked along. Alana and Julia followed suit in response.
Eventually they reached Alana’s home after about fifteen minutes of walking from the field and across the pasture. They just chitchatted on and off and didn’t really cover much except for names, ages, and things similar to that. Alana unlocked the front door with her key and opened it for Julia and Kevin to walk inside.
Her home was definitely cozy and warm, especially rustic style wise. All the furniture was slightly worn but all of it fit perfectly, not a single thing was out of place. Even though it was a rustic style it was as clean as a pin and the glass windows sparkled in the sunlight that bounced off of them in all directions.
“Here’s the phone,” Alana said, picking it up off of its dock and handing it over to Kevin.
“Do you mind if I just step into this other room?” he asked.
“No, go ahead,” Alana waved him off and went to plop down beside Julia on the couch. She was flipping through the channels on the television then she turned it off and turned to Alana.
“There’s never anything on this time of day,” she said, tossing down the remote, “But, there is something going on between you and that Kevin guy. Did you see the way he smiled at you and just kind of stared? He really does have a gorgeous smile you know.”
Alana rolled her eyes, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. He’s just being nice Julia; some guys are actually polite instead of trying to make you fall for them all the time. There’s nothing going on, I just met him anyways.”
“That’s what you think,” Julia said under her breath. At that exact moment Kevin walked back in the main room. The two girls turned to face him and he indicated that the person on the other line was talking a lot with the gesture of his hand.
“Yeah, Joe,” he paused and rolled his eyes as Alana and Julia laughed at his expression, “I know, I didn’t plan it! I’ll be there in time for the show don’t worry, bye!” He pressed the button to hang up and he put the phone back where it originally was.
“Ugh, brothers, what can you do with them?” he said walking over.
“Yeah, I know where you’re coming from. I have one myself,” Alana replied getting up off the couch, “So, what the verdict on the car?”
“Oh yeah, my brother said one of our friends is coming to pick me up. It might be an hour or so though,” he told them.
“You can just hang around here if you’d like,” Julia tuned in as Alana gave her an unsure look. It was like she lived there instead of Alana, just inviting people to stay with out Alana’s consent. To her he did seem like the type of person that wouldn’t steal anything and etc., plus, Alana noticed a purity ring on his finger so he must be close to his faith. Julia just shrugged as she looked back at Alana when Kevin wasn’t watching.
“Uh, yeah, you can hang around here. There isn’t really anywhere else to go for a ways anyway,” she agreed skeptically.
Kevin nodded and smiled, “Thank you very much, I appreciate it greatly. I hope I didn’t mess up your plans or anything. I didn’t mean to intrude if I did.”
“During the summer we don’t really do anything important. So, no, you didn’t at all,” Alana said cheerfully.
“That’s what you get for living on a farm with overly obsessive working fathers,” Julia said getting up and going to stand next to Alana, “Hey Alana, do you have anything to eat I’m starving!”
Alana pondered the question and went to look in the fridge. “Uh, we have some stuff for sandwiches, would you like anything Kevin?”
He walked over and peered inside to see what was in the fridge, “Um, I can get it myself; you don’t need to do anything. Thanks though.”
“No, we can get it for you. After your car dying and kind of being stranded I think you need a break,” Julia suggested with a grin.
“Yeah, go sit down in the living room and turn on the television. There’s nothing on this time of day though,” Alana said, grabbing things out of the fridge. Kevin laughed, “Thanks for the warning.”
He went back in the joined living room to the kitchen and the girls heard the television volume grow meaning he had turned it on as told. The girls made sandwiches for each other and asking what Kevin liked they did for him too. Alana and Julia strode back into the living room, sandwiches on plates in hand, and found that Kevin was fast asleep in the reclined chair.
“He looks so, peaceful,” Julia said as they stood there watching him sleep.
Alana laughed, “Of course he does, he’s sleeping.” She walked to the nearby coat closet and pulled out a soft blue blanket. She came back and draped it over Kevin as he turned slightly turned to his side and mumbled in his sleep.
“Let’s just leave him alone and go in my room to eat,” Alana suggested as she turned off the television.
“Okay, I’ll just put his in the kitchen then,” Julia said, whipping around and skipping to the kitchen.
Alana stayed there and watched Kevin sleep for a moment before going to her room. She couldn’t help but wonder what he meant when he said something about a show when he was talking to his brother on the phone. Did he mean the movies or a concert or something? She let the question that was floating in her mind go and grabbed her sandwich off the table to join Julia.
Comments are quite lovely.. =D =D
