Pocketful Of Sunshine
~ A Nick one-shot for Ashley~
* Joe’s point of view *
Ashley and I were the crazy two of the band. Everyone always said that we were the closest. That was before IT happened. I remember that day. The day Ashley had a complete turn around.
*Nick’s point of view *
Ever since THAT day, Ashley has been different than she was before. Rather than being the goofy one, everyone says she’s more like me now. I remember that day perfectly.
I had a letter that the mailman had given me, addressed to Ashley. I went into her room to give it to her. She was brushing her hair when I came in.
“Mail.” I said, handing it to her.
Her and I sat down on the bed while she opened it. As she read the letter, she began to cry. She scooted over and put her head on my shoulder. I held her.

I heard something coming from Ashley’s room. I went in there. When I opened the door, I saw Nick holding Ashley because she was crying. I mouthed, “What’s wrong?” to Nick. He pointed at a letter and an envelope that was on the floor. I picked it up.
Dear Our Precious Ashley,
I am sad to say that at this moment, out time with you is coming to an end. I write this with the last of my energy. Your father and I were both in a car accident involving a drunk driver. The doctor has told us that we do not have much time left. I am writing this letter to tell you goodbye and that I will miss you. You will be very sad too. Remember, where I am going is a much better place than on Earth. I’m going to be with God. Your father and I have left you everything since you our only child. Mrs.Jonas will be left in care of it until you come of age. Now I wish you goodbye and good luck in your career. We will miss you. We love you.
Love,
Mom & Dad
My eyes were wide with surprise. I sat down next to Ashley.
“Ashley, I – I’m so sorry.” I said.
From that day on, Ashley was different. She was no longer the happy, goofy Ashley. Ashley never talked anymore. She sulked around and put on fake smiles for the fans and press. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for her, she was diagnosed with diabetes. After that, she didn’t even try to put on a fake smile for press and she always spoke in the same depressing tone. Just when I thought Ashley was never going to smile again, I saw the grin I had been hoping for appear on her face again, even though I knew it wasn’t for me. It happened when I was spying on her and Nick in his room one day. Him and Ashley had become really close because of the diabetes thing.
“I dunno,” she said, “it just feels like the world is against me.”
“I know, it’s like…just different.” Nick said.
“So when are we leaving for Canada?” Ashley asked.
Even though she wasn’t in Camp Rock, she was still coming with us.
“Next week, eh.” Nick said in a fake Canadian accent.
That’s when I saw Ashley’s grin creep across her face. She began to laugh.
When she stopped, she said, “Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to laugh.”
Her and Nick sat in silence for a while.
“Nick, thank you.”
“For what?”
“For helping me through this. You helped me through my pain. You brought my smile back.”
“No prob. It wasn’t just for your benefit. Everyone else has been wanted to see your smile for a long time.”
“I don’t know. I think it’ll be a while before I can just smile normally for anyone.”
“Why can you only smile for me?”
“It’s because…well…no one else really understands my pain. You’re like my…I don’t know…pocketful of sunshine.”

From that day on, Ashley slowly worked her way up to being the normal Ashley again. She did it hand in hand with her pocketful of sunshine.
