Chapter Six
Abigail’s POV
“What?!” I asked. I couldn’t believe it. Well, actually, I could. No surprise. My mother was irresponsible for her actions.
“You’re going to be a big sister…again” she told me.
“What?! No!” I yelled
“Abigail, baby, I know this is hard for you, but it’ll be good. We’ll all be a family. You’ll have a new Daddy…” Mom started to say.
“I have no Dad! I never will! You can’t say he’s my dad because he’s not!” I yelled, tears pouring down my face.
“Honey, it’s okay. We just need some mommy daughter time together, huh?” she said, giving me a hug.
“I’m going for a walk” I said, and without another word, I pulled myself from her grasp, and flew out the door.
Nick’s POV
“I’m going for a walk” I said, heading out the door.
“Okay honey. Be back for dinner” Mom called.
“I will!” I yelled back.
I started down the street and found myself near the grocery store I’d met Abigail at the other day. Even though I knew nothing about her, she was all I thought about.
No way. It couldn’t be I thought as a girl with dark, straight brown hair, brown eyes, freckles, and greatly resembled Abigail flew past me.
“Hey! Wait!” I called after her, chasing her. It better have been her, or else I was going to feel really stupid.
The girl came to a sudden stop, and didn’t turn around.
“Hey, are you, Abigail?” I said breathlessly. She could run fast.
She gave a little nod, not looking at me.
“Hi. I’m Nick. We met the other day at the store. I helped you out in the check out line. Remember?” I asked.
“Yes” she said quietly. “Thank you, but I can’t pay you back. I really can’t. I’m so sorry”
“No, it’s okay. I’m fine. I don’t need it. It was nothing, really” I assured her.
“You sure?” she asked, suddenly looking me straight in the face.
“Sure” I breathed.
She smiled a little “Thanks”
“No problem” I smiled too.
There was an awkward silence.
“So, are you busy?” I asked.
She shook her head. “No” she mumbled.
“Then, uh, do you want to go get something to drink, like, Starbucks?” I asked
Her face lit up “St-starbucks?” she stuttered.
I laughed “Yeah. You cool with that?”
She nodded quickly. “Yeah! I mean, I couldn’t. You’ve already paid for my groceries and stuff so…” she tried to say.
I smiled “It’s okay. My treat, really. You need to learn to accept it when people want to buy you something” I joked.
She smiled again. “Okay. Um, sounds good then.”
I smiled too and lead her to a near by Starbucks.
Maybe I’d finally get to know her.
Abigail’s POV
I’d never been to Starbucks. I was really excited, actually. Nick was really sweet. He didn’t know anything about me, and he was already acting like he’d known me my whole life.
The only problem with this was, once I got close to someone and liked them enough, I had to go away.
Chapter Seven
Nick’s POV
“So, what do you want? You can pick whatever.” I told Abigail
She hesitated.
“Is something wrong?” I asked her.
“Um, well” she stuttered, and pulled me aside out of the line
“What? You can tell me, it’s okay” I assured her.
“I’ve never, actually had Starbucks, so I don’t know what to get…” she admitted.
“Really?” I asked
She nodded.
“Hey, that’s nothing to be embarrassed about” I told her.
She shrugged. “Me and my mom, we just, don’t have a lot, and, like, we’ve had a little bit of a hard life…it’s complicated” she told me.
“Wow. Well, if you ever need someone to talk to, I’m here. And I know I’m like a complete stranger, but I’m still here” I told her.
She smiled. “Thanks. So, what’s good?”
“Uh, do you like coffee?” I asked
“Kinda.” She said.
“Um, to be on the safe side, my brother likes the Strawberries and Crème frappuccinos” I told her
“I love strawberries!” Abigail exclaimed
I laughed. “Okay then, I guess we have a winner!”
We got in line and ordered our drinks, while just kind of talking about random stuff. She didn’t really know anything about bands and stuff. I don’t even think she knew who I was. But, that was okay. That was good, actually, because I could have a normal conversation with her. Yet, it was kind of abnormal, because she didn’t really know anything about modern stuff.
“So, uh, where do you live?” I asked.
Abigail stopped dead. “Uh, a place”
“It’s cool. You don’t have to tell me” I said. And she really didn’t. If she didn’t want to, it was cool. It was her business, and I wasn’t going to bother her about it.
“Okay, I don’t live in the best area” she confessed.
“It’s fine, Abigail, you don’t have to tell me things you don’t want to” I assured her.
“But it’s not that I want to, I need to.” She said.
“Okay, uh, do you want to do this privately?” I asked, noticing 3 girls starring at me.
She nodded. “Yeah”
“Okay, I know a place” I said, and we got up and left the Starbucks.
Chapter Eight
Abigail’s POV
Starbucks is good.
I needed to tell somebody, and even though I barely knew him, I felt like I could tell Nick anything. And, truth was, I really, really needed to.
“Okay, I barely know you. You’re practically a stranger, but, I need to tell someone, and it’s going to be you. Is that okay?” I asked.
Nick nodded. “Go ahead. I swear I won’t tell. Unless, you’re like, abused or something because that needs to be reported”
I forced a laugh. “No, I’m not abused”
“Okay, go ahead then” Nick said
(~Abigail’s story~)
It’s always been just my mom and I. I never knew my dad, and probably never will. My mother barely knew him. They were never married or anything. I was practically an accident. I wasn’t really planned, if that makes sense.
A few years ago, well, first of all, I’m 15. When I was about, 8 or 9, my mom started doing really weird things. Leaving me at home alone, coming home late at night, sometimes with men, smelling horrible like smoke and alcohol, and it was scaring me.
I was 8, and everyone knows an 8 year old should NOT be home alone. Especially in a very, very, unsafe neighborhood without a door that locked properly.
I still don’t completely remember it perfectly, because it happened so fast, but I remember 2 men coming to our house, a few days after my mom had her second child, my half brother, Thomas. I was taken from my mom, and my mom was arrested at the scene, my new ‘father’ and ‘brother’ didn’t do anything for me.
Over time, I learned my mother was a drug-addict and alcoholic. My step-father had taken his son into his full custody, and I was now in the state’s care. I was in and out of foster homes until I was 12 ½ , when I was finally re-united with my mom.
While she was trying to sort through her life, she’d had 1 other child, and was now 8 ½ months pregnant with her new husband, who was my step-father.
My mom gave birth to my 3rd half brother, who was named Matthew. My other brother, whom I never actually met, was named Christopher.
3 months after Matt was born, and 4 months after I was back with my mom, I was being pulled from her yet again, and my ex-step dad and half brother were leaving, same situation as the first two. My mom was being arrested again for buying drugs and driving while intoxicated.
Now, about 3 years later, I’m back with my mother after being, yet again, in and out of foster homes all over California. She’s was cleared with the state after completing her rehab and all that great stuff.
Now, today, she tells me that she’s getting married and is already pregnant with her fiancé’s child. And, she wants be to be ‘happy’.
And, for the past 3 months we’ve been together, I’ve cooked for HER everynight, if we even eat, ran the errands FOR HER, cooked for her and her fiancé/ my step-dad-to-be, unfortunately because I do not like him one bit, and practically done everything.
My mom had a great job when I went to live with her, but she lost it and we had to run before the child protective services found out, and took me away because she ‘didn’t want to lose me again’. Correction, she had to run, because what was I running from? Safety, love, food, sort of happiness? People who looked out for me? A better life? Sure doesn’t seem like something you’d run from.
For the past few days, I’ve been tempted to call the child’s protective services and report myself. That’s as low as it gets.
(~end of story, conversation again. Nick’s POV~)
I sat there, in shock. I couldn’t believe it. This sweet girl had a horrible life, and all she wanted was love, and people who cared about her.
“I’m so, so sorry Abigail. I really am” I said.
“There’s nothing you can do. The only people that can do anything are me, my mother, and the child’s protective services” Abigail said.
“Are you sure there’s nothing I can do?” I asked
“Don’t call them” she said.
“What?” I asked, confused.
“Don’t call the child’s protective services” she said.
“What? Why? You’re in danger, kind of.” I said.
She forced a laugh. “Like I said, no one can do anything really. Please, don’t call. Let me. I don’t really want to disappoint my mom. She’s wanted me back for so long. And I love her. I mean, she’s my mom. And I’ve always wanted to be back with her, until I found out what it’d be like. If it really gets to me though, I’ll call. I will” she said.
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Positive” she said. “What time is it?” she asked.
“Uh, 5, why?” I told her.
“Oh my gosh, I have to go. I’m so sorry. Thanks for everything. I’ll see you around, okay?” Abigail said, running off.
“Wait! Abigail!” I said running after her, until I lost her in the crowd.
Chapter Nine
Abigail’s POV
“Mom! I’m sorry I’ve been gone so long. Don’t be mad…” I ran into our home, if you could call it that, to find more people then my mother and step dad to be.
2 police officers, my Guardian ad Litem, and 2 other people I recognized from the child’s protective services.
“Abigail, say goodbye to your mom, she’s going back to jail, and you’re coming back with us” my Guardian ad Litem said.
Oh. My. Gosh.
