Here I was again, taking another order for another family. I’m only 17 and I’m working double shifts. School was out of the question now, since my parents died. I not only have to work for me but I have to support my younger sister as well.
It was a normal day; our parents were dropping us off at school and said they would see us at home later that day. At school the principal called us up to his office. It turns out their car flipped over in the freeway.
Our relatives didn’t want anything to do with us and I could not have my sister sleeping in a shelter.
Since then I’ve been fending for us, barley getting enough money to feed us. My sister, Leanne, still went to school naturally. I couldn’t spare her future.
I landed this waitress job at a local cheap restaurant, which was mainly empty.
“Miss. Lindsey?” a woman said reading my nametag
I smiled sweetly at her, “Yes m’am?”
“I would like a cheese burger.”
I quickly wrote the short cut for what she wanted and lifted my head to look at her husband.
“A steak, with mashed potatoes please and thank you.” He smiled. His double chin and thick neck jiggled as he laughed at the conversation he was having with his petite wife.
I looked at a kid that looked around ten.
“Pizza!”
I giggled at him and wrote it down.
“I’ll be right out with your order” I smiled again taking their menus
I walked towards the kitchen and slipped the sheet into a rod where the chef could see it.
“Order up!” he called
I grabbed the orders I had made about 15 minutes ago and walked over to the brown-eyed couple, clearly on a date.
“Chicken sandwich, and a ceaser salad.” I set the plates down with the person who ordered them.
“Thanks.” The male said not taking his eyes off his girlfriend.
I had never had that kind of affection before, and it made me feel horrible. Lonely and sad. All I knew now was making money. Every week I would put ten dollars in a shoebox for my sister. She wanted to go to a Jonas Brothers concert, and she deserved it. Her grades where shooting out of the roof, and I wanted her to have the best seat in the house. She didn’t know I was saving for her, she would only tell me to buy myself something nice.
I was an orphan 17 year old, I didn’t know what nice was.
My red hair fell to my face as I walked back to the kitchen.
“Tie it up!” my manager hissed as he walked out.
I sighed and forcefully tied it back up.
“Lindsay! Leanne called.” One of the waiters said. His blue eyes were cold.
“What happened!”?
“Calm down! She said she was going to her friends house after school.” He laughed
“Alright…” I grabbed the small of my back. Pain had accumulated over the last week.
“You should take a break.” He looked at me worried
He was 23 years old and had a right to be here, I was like the baby of this place.
“Not now,” I insisted
“Order up!” the chef called
I went over to him again unwillingly.
I worked form 7 am – 4 pm and slept for a while only to return at 8pm to work until 12 am.
My life being hectic was an understatement.
