Prologue
“And there she goes, three-turn, her signature move. I wonder if she’ll go for the loop jump. Oh! And she does and lands it perfectly!” Jennifer Bartlin announced.
“She’s so graceful out there on the ice. Just look at how nicely she handles herself.” Brett Jackson announced. “And there she goes on the two-foot spin!! Look at her go!”
“The judges are going to love that one! That’s going to rack her up some points” Jennifer said.
Ashley-Noel Sanders glided across the ice, following her routine that she’d been practicing for months. She was about to make Olympic-qualifiers, something she always got to but never made it past. She’d spent her entire life skating, all for the Olympic team. She had to make it this year, or else she’d completely lose all hope in everyone…especially herself.
“And she lands the jump!” Brett said into his microphone.
The crowd cheered loudly as she finished up her routine.
Ashley-Noel finished in the center of the ice, with her final pose and a huge smile on her face. The crowd threw flowers onto the ice and stuffed animals as the applauded, and she picked up one of the roses that had landed on the ground, waving and smiling as she skated off the ice.
“You were great Ash!” Lloyd, her coach, told her.
“Thanks” she said, breathlessly, taking a drink of her water.
“Let’s go see your score” Lloyd guided her over to the waiting area.
“And let’s see what this 20-year old skater scored!” Jennifer announced.
The scores appeared on the scoreboard, reading 8.8, 9.4, 10, 10, 8.5, and 9.5.
“And that’s it!! Ashley-Noel Sanders has made it to the Olympic qualifiers! Now all she has to do is make it past that and she’ll be on the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team!” Brett announced.
The crowd cheered, and Ashley gave her coach a hug.
“Thank you” she whispered to him.
“Hey, it was all you. And you still have to make it past qualifiers” he whispered back.
“I know, but if it weren’t for you, I would’ve given up a long time ago” she told him.
“You love skating, you would’ve kept going. With or without me and your parents pushing you” he said.
“Maybe, but I wouldn’t be doing it competitively.” Ashley laughed.
~Meanwhile~
“Don’t you think they get cold in those tiny outfits?” Nick asked, watching figure skaters on TV.
“I’d think so. They were like, nothing practically” Joe joked.
“She’s pretty” Kevin said, as a blonde girl waved to the camera, smiling as she got her amazing score.
“Yeah, she is.” Nick agreed.
“Wait, isn’t that that girl whose like, dedicated herself to skating since she was, like, 8 or something” Joe asked
“They all have” Nick said.
“No, he’s right. One of them has been doing this her entire life, all for the Olympics” Kevin said.
“Whoa, that’s dedication, big time” Nick said.
“Seriously” Joe agreed.
“She is pretty though” Nick said.
“Yeah, she is” Joe agreed.
“What’s her name?” Nick asked.
“Ashley-Noel Sanders” Kevin told him, starring at the skater on the television.
