Chapter 1
Jennifer sat waiting for the doctor after her scheduled treatment, slowing the progression of the disease now taking over her body. Her mother sat nervously in the chair across from the bed, looking on at her daughter with concern. Every night before bed, she would pray that a miracle would happen, something that would prevent her from losing one of her two daughters, her everything. Jen’s sister Crystal sat in the corner texting, eyes glued to the screen of her cell phone. It always felt as though Crystal didn’t care about her younger sister, but the truth was, she was masking the pain behind her false attitude.
With two knocks, her doctor entered, her medical files attached firmly to a clipboard, held closely to his chest. “Miss Williams, how are we feeling?”
Jen shifted from her position atop the hospital bed, “I’ve been better”.
Her doctor then turned to her mother, murmured a few words and then faced Jen once more. “Jennifer, there’s someone here I’d like you meet.” A woman walked in, folder in hand, and a smile spread brightly across her face. “I’d like to introduce you to Michelle; she’s from the Make A Wish foundation.”
At this statement, reality finally hit home with Jen as her eyes filled with tears. She bit down on her lip, forcefully telling herself that she would not cry. Michelle had made her way over to where the girl sat, “I’m sure you’re fully aware of what our organization does. We grant wishes to those who are terminally ill, turning their dreams into reality. The hospital staff has selected you as the recipient of this year’s honor if you’d like to accept it.”
The last thing Jennifer wanted was for people to take pity on her, but this was an offer she couldn’t refuse. She nodded her head, “Yes, I would like to do it. Thank you.”
Sitting down in a chair, Michelle pulled out a small notepad, “If you don’t mind, I’d like to ask you a few questions, to get to know you better.” Fifteen minutes later, the representative from the foundation found herself at a loss for words. Jen had opened up about her illness, her life and who she was as a person, truly inspiring the woman simply doing her job.
Looking up from her tablet, Michelle locked eyes with the young girl, “Now I want you to take your time with this decision, and I want you to know that I am going to do everything I can to make your wish happen.” Jen nodded and she continued, “Do you have anything in mind?”
Jen knew very well what her heart desired most, what she dreamt about every night. Although people probably requested to meet celebrities all the time, she felt as though her request was nearly impossible. In a hushed tone, Jen began to spill her desire, “I’d like to go to a Jonas Brothers concert, and I’d love to meet them. If I could do that.” Her eyes immediately drifted towards her mother, who smiled and nodded gently in her daughter’s direction. As a mother, she understood just how much these three boys meant to her little girl. They helped her find the strength to make it this far, and Jen was forever grateful, because without them, she had nothing to believe in.
“I think that can be arranged” Michelle said before offering her best wishes and leaving the family to themselves. As she waited for the elevator outside of Jennifer’s hospital room, she promised herself that she would do everything in her power to make the girl’s wish come true.
