Hey guys...I haven'y posted a one-shot in awhile and I've had this one written and sitting on my comp, so i figured I'd put it up and hope that people will read and comment! it was actually based off of a dream I had once..it was seriously the coolest dream ever...so enjoy (i hope!)
I arrived in front of the modern house around noon on a beautiful day in May. Nervously, I walked up the path lined by hedges. His father stood waiting, and grinned when he saw me. He lifted my heavy duffel from my shoulder and gave me a one-armed hug.
“Nice to see you back,” he said. Then he led me inside, through the front door, which was surrounded by trendy glass, which displayed the front rooms of the house to anyone outside. Up the stairs we went, leading to a bedroom obviously occupied by a guy most of the time. A very messy guy. He set my stuff down.
“Okay, so you can stay here until he comes, and when he comes up to put his stuff down, you can surprise him,” his eyes sparkled in excitement. “He’ll be so ecstatic to see you.”
I nodded, unable to speak. I perched on the edge of his bed as his father left, letting my gaze wander thoughtfully around his room. I couldn’t believe I was finally he—suddenly I felt my pocket vibrate, breaking off my thoughts. It was a call from…his father. Confused, I flipped it open.
“Hello?”
“Hey, sport, can you run down to the kitchen and get yourself a soda? I totally forgot to offer one to you.” I laughed.
“Sure thing,” I chirped before hanging up. I jogged down the steps and peeked out the front of the house, spying more of his relatives gathering there, awaiting his return. Butterflies erupted in my stomach as I realized how close I was to seeing him again.
I quickly grabbed a can of Coke from the fridge, gulping it down nervously. I nearly choked on it, though, when I felt my pocket vibrate yet again.
“Hello?” I said to his dad.
“Hide.” He said in a hushed voice.
“Excuse me?”
“Hide, sport, they’re here. They’ll see you through the glass if you go back upstairs. Just…I don’t know…find somewhere where they won’t see you until you can go back up.”
“Um…okay.” We hung up.
Attempting to not hyperventilate, I looked all around for a spot. I heard the door open and voices all talking at once and did the only thing I could think of in such short notice: duck down behind the kitchen island.
Relatives poured into the kitchen, munching on the snacks set out. For this was a welcome home party after all. A grumpy looking aunt passed by me and gave me a disapproving look.
Panicking, I merely pressed a shaking finger to my lips. The woman scowled but continued on her way. Just as I was about to heave a sigh of relief, a jovial uncle passed by. He also spotted me, and laughed when I pressed my finger once more to my lips. This time a whole sigh managed its way out before I spotted HIM. Oh God.
“Joe,” I whispered, unable to control my excitement any longer. He was across the kitchen and dining room, talking to someone I could not see, Nick at his side. I knew, now that I had seen him, that I had to go to him.
My plan was to go up behind him, put my hands over his eyes and shout, “Guess who?!” But as I got closer, it seemed that wouldn’t be possible. For, he suddenly turned around in my direction.
It took him a moment to realize what he was seeing. But when he did…
“Mary!” his voice was full of extreme happiness, his face lit up like a thousand candles. I felt my own happiness swell up and burst inside of me, and I ran to him, unable to contain myself any longer. He dropped down on one knee and spread his arms open, just as I jumped into his arms.
“Joe,” I whispered into his shirt, as tears coursed down my cheeks. Joe was hugging me close to him. So close. Finally, so close.
“I know, baby…I know,” his own tears fell lightly into my hair, and he gave me one last squeeze, before, with one smooth movement, he lifted me up.
I looked up at him, my teary teal eyes linking on his own brown ones. And then his lips were on mine, kissing me over and over, even as he carried me into the living room, his soft lips colliding with mine as he set me carefully on the couch. He finally pulled away, his eyes burning with so much emotion he could have moved a mountain just by looking at it.
From another room, I vaguely heard Nick and Kevin singing in harmony to their relatives.
“Joe…”I whispered, looking up into his beautiful face. “You should go join them.”
“No,” he said, stubborn as a 5-year-old. “I don’t want to be anywhere but here, with you, my love.”
