Nick's POV
Nick cursed in his mind as he drove to the Hospital. Why did this have to happen when he was watching Kevin? Laura was going to murder him. He turned into the parking lot of the hospital, and parked the car in the closest spot. "Hey buddy, do you want me to carry you or can you walk on your own?"
"I'll walk." Kevin whimpered.
Nick nodded and helped Kevin out of the car. The sliding doors of the hospital opened, and he was hit with cold air and the strong smell of anestetic. He felt Kevin shiver. Nick grabbed the paperwork, something that he grew used to with the hospital stays for him and the quick runs for Joe. He scanned the piece of paper cursing under his breath again.
After a few moments of struggling to fill out the paper work, he slid it in the opening under the glass window. The nurse looked at the papers motioning to the nurse next to her. The door opened 10 minutes later, and motioned them in. Nick glanced guiltily around the room, knowing that they had been pushed ahead because of who he was. Luckily, there were not that many people in the ER.
They peppered Kevin with questions, how old was he, what happened, as they took his temperature and blood pressure. A few moments later, they were taken to a small hospital room. Kevin sat solemnly on the bed, cradling his arm carefully. They sat in silence for about 30 minutes before the nurse took him to get some x-rays. He followed Kevin to the x-ray room and waited til he was done.
"Hey buddy, I'm going to go call your parents. Okay? I'll be right back."
Kevin nodded sadly, "Come back soon. Is daddy coming?"
Nick felt his heart drop, "Um, yes. I just have to call him." He exited the door quickly, though he knew that it would be awhile til Kevin and Laura came to the hospital. Nick opened his cell phone looking for service knowing that he would have to be back before the doctor came to examine him.
Mia's POV
"See you next month. Take care little Joey." Mia said with a wave and exited the tiny room. She had 15 minutes until she had to pick up Alexis, Joey Davidson's check up took a little longer than she wanted. Mia walked quickly down the white hallways shivering a bit. She never got used to the coldness of the hospital, not to mention the strong smell of latex gloves and anesthetic. She was glad that she did not have to work at the hospital. The 3 years of ER requirements were bad enough.
"Dr. Jenson!"
Mia turned around, seeing a nurse in Winnie the Pooh scrubs rushing towards her. "We have a patient with a broken bone; Dr. Lee just called in sick. Do you think you could quickly check him out and set his cast? I know you're busy, but it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. It's kind of a special case." She said with pleading eyes.
Mia sighed, "Alright. Can I have his file?"
The nurse handed her the off white folder. "Thank you so much."
"Your welcome." She would be late picking up Alexis again. It always made her feel guilty when she came late, even though the 3 year old never cared.
Mia took the elevator to the bottom floor. This was where all the 'quick fixes' as Mia liked to call them, were located. Patients here had a broken bone or even feeling sick and they needed a diagnosis. More minor cases. She glanced at the folder before opening the door. Paul. Hm.
There lying on the Hospital Bed sleeping was a little boy. He had a head full of dark brown curls. He was cradling his right arm and sleeping soundly. "Hey Paul, sorry to wake you." She said softly. Paul stirred and his eyes opened, they widened with fright. Mia looked around for the parent in the room. There was no one. She felt her stomach clench with anger, what parents in their right mind would leaved a child this young alone. They probably just had to go to the bathroom, but that was erroneous because there was a small bathroom in this room.
The sound of Paul wincing snapped her out of her thoughts. She saw tears brimming in his eyes. "It's okay Paul, I'm Dr. Mia." she said with a soft voice, "How old are you?"
"I'm 5. My name is Kevin. Well, Paul is my first name, but I go by Kevin." He said urgently.
"Kevin, I love that name." She said with a smile, trying to calm him down. It would have been easier if the parent was here. "Can you tell me what happened?"
"I-I wanted to climb up to the top of the tree, b-but I fell. My arm hurts." He said his lower lip quivering.
"You landed on that arm?" He nodded.
"Okay, well it seems that you broke it. So, we're going to put a cool cast on your arm." Mia said washing her hands, "It's going to be a temporary one, so either your mom or dad is going to have to take you to the doctor to get a hard cast."
Kevin cradled his arm and shied away from Mia. "Kevin it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to fix your arm." She said kneeling by the bed. "It's going to make it feel a whole lot better." Mia said.
"Really?" He said, his wide brown eyes made her heart melt.
"Yes." Mia said. "We're going to wrap some of this fluffy cotton stuff around your arm, then wrap this bandage around it. It's going to get a little warm because it has to harden. Alrighty?"
"Okay."
"But first, I'm going to need to have a look at it." Mia said. Kevin seemed to be softening up to her. He held out his arm with no complaints, except to wince when she touched it. "Does it hurt here?" She said gently touching the swollen area.
"Yes." He said.
Awww, poor boy. "Okay." She wrapped the cotten around his arm and picked up the long bandages. With her skillful hand, she wrapped his arm gently. "Kevin, here's what we have to do. We need to squeeze your arm to get the bandages to stick. You want to help?"
"Okay." He said wrapping his small hand around the thick bandage. Together they secured the bandage onto his arm. "It's all warm." Kevin said with a smile. The first one she saw, he had an adorable smile with missing teeth and everything. She couldn't help but fall in love with this kid.
"I'm sure it is. You were very brave." She said ruffling his hair. Now where were his parents? She clenched her teeth, "You can probably go home now." Mia said signing her name on the bottom of the medical release form. "Sweetie, where are you parents?"
Right when she said it, the door opened loudly. Mia turned around, with a hand on her hip. He was obviously the parent because-well. Mia felt her thoughts become muddled. He was incredibly good looking, with the same curly hair and warm brown eyes. He was about a head taller than her and had a muscular build. "Are you his parent?" Her voice oozing with cold politeness. Before he had a chance to say anything, she pulled the curtain around the bed closed. "You cannot leave your child alone like that Mr.-" Mia glanced at the clipboard. "Jonas." She said showing no surprise. Special case. What special case, because he was a celebrity?
"Nick, please." He-Nick said.
"Anyways, Nick" Mia said looking away. "Kevin is in good shape. You have to take him to get a hard cast with an Orthopedic Doctor. If you need references, call your pediatrician. You should probably make an appointment with his pediatrician too." Mia said in her 'professional voice' as many people called it. "He's good to go. Your son was very brave."
"Thank you." Mr. Jonas said. "I appreciate it."
"No problem, it's my job." Mia said looking him straight in the eye.
"Listen," he said, "I know it's kind of straight forward, but would you like to get lunch?"
Mia looked at him. On the folder, it said mother- Laura Jonas. What a jerk, trying to ask her out when he was married. "No thank you, wouldn't that be a bit hard on your wife." She emphasized.
The door opened and another man came in. "Hey buddy, how's your arm?" He said with his arms out.
"Daddy!" Kevin said hopping out of bed and into his arms.
Mia looked from Kevin, to the new man, and finally to Nick who had an amused look on his face. "If you look at the folder again. It says father-Kevin Jonas."
Mia blushed, "My apologies. I'll send the nurse in with the paperwork." Mia said, her face beginning to burn. Kevin's father looked at them curiously as Mia hurried out of the room, she found Julie and handed her a folder. "Could you please give the rest of the discharge papers for Kevin Jonas down in room 4A?" Julie looked at her curiously, "I'm really late picking up Alexis." Mia blurted out.
"Oh, alright. Give her a hug for me." Mia gave her a soft smile.
