Chapter 3
Nick's POV
"What was that all about?" Kevin said with a smile.
Nick snapped out of his day dream, "Oh nothing."
"You have that look. The doctor hit you hard didn't she?"
Nick shook his head, "No, didn't make a good impression." Nick smiled. He couldn't get her image out of his mind. She was young, pretty, and seemed to hate his guts for some reason.
"Okay then." Kevin said, signing the paper that the nurse brought.
"Is Laura going to murder me?"
Kevin shrugged, "Probably. I'll try to convince her. He's a five year old boy, what does she expect? Think of all mom had to go through when we were five." He said, "I mean, Joe stabbed me with a pencil."
Nick laughed, "Yeah, she's still going to kill me though."
"Yeah, probably." Kevin handed the paperwork to the nurse.
"You're all set to go." She said.
"Thank you." Kevin picked up Kevin Jr. and walked out of the Hospital.
Mia's POV
Mia walked as fast as she could to her car. Her face was burning in embarrassment still from her encounter. She pulled off her lab coat, exposing her still thin frame. She slipped into black trench coat and quickly wrapped a blue scarf around her neck. It was December and cold in Washington D.C. A light snow had fallen, lightly dusting every thing with a white powder.
She fumed about Nick. What a jerk, letting her ramble on about him being a bad father. He could have stopped her in the middle of her rudeness. The look on his face told her that he was amused by her anger. And then he asked her out? It could have been a friendly thing, but not the way he was looking at her. She was fairly used to it now. Mia's mother always told her she was very good looking, but in her heart she knew that her sister Claire was the pretty one. When she worked in the Hospital, she had many adult patients trying to make a move while she worked. Not to mention a doctor or two. It wasn't something she was proud of though. It was hard to work when you felt the ghost of an unwanted touch on your leg or back.
Oh well, at least she had Jason. Tall, blonde, handsome. He treated her well, and she loved him. He was a successful business man at his father's business. Mia was just waiting for him to propose. Next month would be 2 years. Though, the new business line was causing them to go long distance a lot more. He traveled a lot to promote the business. She understood, but sometimes she went weeks without seeing him. People may think that proposing would be too soon, especially if he was gone a lot, but their relationship was different.
Mia pulled in front of the day care, and got out. Jane came out with Alexis bundled up in her winter clothes. "Sorry I'm late. I got held up at the Hospital." Mia apologized.
"It's okay. She's a little angel, it was no problem." Mia smiled and strapped in Alexis. "You're lucky she's so good."
"Yeah, I know. I don't what I would do if she wasn't." Closing the car door, Mia turned around, "Thanks Jane so much. I don't know what I would do without you." She said giving the old lady a hug. "Bye!" She hopped back into the car and waved. In the back, Alexis waved at Jane.
"Hey cutie, how was daycare?" Mia asked glancing at the rear mirror.
"Gwood." She smiled. "We painted." Alexis said holding up a crumpled piece of paper.
"Wow, it's so pretty Lexie. We'll have to put that one on the fridge."
Alexis grinned and gazed out the window, "Mia, am I going with you?"
"Where?" Mia glanced in the rear veiw mirror again. Alexis was looking at her with her wide eyed gaze. She had called her Mia...
"To work."
"Oh, yes. Tommorrow is Friday."
"Okay." Alexis was quiet and gazed out the window again, kicking her feet. She wondered what brought that up.
