Again, I'm leaving tomorrow and won't be back until next Sunday. But while I'm away and bored, I'll write some new chapters and post them once I get back! Sorry for the long wait.
Chapter Two
As Nathan sat in front of the television, catching up on the newest cartoons, I began to straighten up our already clean house. I picked up a few of Nathan’s toys her and there, straightened any pictures that were set up around the house. I wanted Nick to know I actually did something with my life and didn’t let him get to me. I took a small glance down at Nate, who was still engrossed into the television, not caring about anything else in the world. He was such a carefree child. I don’t know how I ended up so lucky. I took a spot next to him on the sofa, but he didn’t even notice. I too began focused on the T.V, that I almost didn’t hear the slight knocking on the front door, but Nate sure did.
His ears perked up at the sound and he shot up from his seat, knowing who stood right behind the front door. He looked over at me and I looked back at him, raising my eyebrow ever so slightly. As if a silent war had been call, we both raced towards the door. I have to admit, I really didn’t intend to let Nate win, but he did indeed reach the door first. Nate, looked up at me, before quickly pulling the door open. Nick was standing with his hands in his pockets and his eyes towards the ground.
“Nick!” Nate screamed, throwing his tiny arms around Nick’s legs. Nick chuckled and patted the top of Nate’s head, making Nate release. Then he looked up into my eyes and I caught my breath. Just one look into his eyes and I could feel all of my old feelings rushing back into me. But I wouldn’t allow them to effect me, he’s the one that hurt me. I should hate him, but I quickly pushed down all the feelings and silently invited him in. Nate didn’t leave his side as we made our way into the kitchen. I knew what Nick came to talk about and I didn’t think Nate should have been in the room with us.
“Nate, why don’t you go watch TV. Nick and I need to talk about some grown up things,” I said, bending down to his level. He sighed and muttered an ‘Okay,’ and left the room with out causing any problems. But as soon as he was gone, I felt uncomfortable in the room and wasn’t able to look at Nick.
“Why’d you leave?” Nick asked one more time, “You’ve got to give me more reason than wanting to find your place in the world.”
I took a deep breath, who knew he’d be starting off with the hard questions. I began to think about the actual reason I left and as soon as I did, I narrowed my eyes and focused on Nick. “You honestly don’t know why I left?”
Nick shook his head, he didn’t know, but he was really curious.
“That night, I was so excited for our date. I had bought a new dress and spent a lot of time getting ready. But then Alex called me an told me you were going to blow me off and spend time with your friends. I wouldn’t have been so made about it, if you had actually called me. Or if let’s say it was the first time. You hurt me that night Nick. You were always so busy and it seemed like there was no room in your life for me. I had to leave, that’s not the life I wanted to live,”
Nick took a few moments to take in everything she had just said. But there was one thing that didn’t make sense.
“I didn’t blow you off!” Nick said in outrage, “Alex told me you were sick and couldn’t go out.”
“I was sick alright, sick of you getting my hopes up and then crushing them….”
“Mommy, you guys are yelling,” Nate said, walking in the room, “Why are you yelling?”
“Oh, sweetie, it’s fine. You don’t need to worry about us, just go watch your cartoons,”
Nate nodded his head and left the room without saying anything else. But as soon as he was out of the room, Nick started back up, “No wonder he’s so sad.”
“What?”
“You heard me, Nate comes into lessons everyday upset. It’s because your never there. Your job gets in the way of you two spending time,”
“Really, I think you know this from personal experience. Because of your job we never got to spend time together,”
Nick was taken back by this, I was right and he knew it.
“I’m sorry,” Nick said simply, bowing his head in shame.
“It’s ok, you were doing what you love,” I said. There was a slight awkwardness in the air and neither of us wanted to say anything, but thankfully Nate saved the day, again.
“Mommy, come see this!”
I quickly moved from my spot in the kitchen, to the living room. The sight inside wasn’t that great though. Nate was standing on top of the high end table, with a cape tied around his neck.
“Nathan no!” I shouted, but it was too late, Nate had already jumped off the table and landed not so gently on the hard floor. Tears began to poor out of little Nate’s eyes. I quickly rushed to his side to make sure nothing was wrong. I reached for his arm, but he pulled his back protectively, whimpering even louder.
“Mommy, my arm hurt!”
“Come on Taylor,” Nick said, “I’ll drive you to the hospital.”
