Chapter: 2
You didn’t think I was done with my story, did you? Well I’m not so don’t worry. Where was I? Oh yeah, the biggest mistake of my life…
I stood there staring at her for another minute, until Frankie started calling my name.
“Joe?” He said giving me a weird look. “What are you looking at?”
“Huh?” I realized he was talking to me. “Oh, nothing. Just a bird or something.” I said making up something.
“Well, it’s almost our turn. Grab a tube!” He said rushing me to the pile of tubes. I grabbed one and set it down next to Frankie. I have to go talk to this girl, I thought. I took a few steps towards her until I was about a foot away. She didn’t notice me at first, she was helping a little boy and his mother get ready to go down the slide. Once the red light next to her stool turned green, she pushed them down into the darkness.
“Hey,” I said to her shyly, “I’m Joe.”
She turned and looked at me, her eyes starting at my head going down to my feet and back up to meet my eyes. “Hello Joe.” She said emotionless.
“And your name is?” I asked her, my voice was begging for a response.
“Kristin.” She said and looked down over the edge of the railing and down to the pool where the slide let out.
“Well, Kristin, it’s nice to meet you.” I said smiling at her, hoping for one in return. I needed to see the thing that made me fall in love again.
“You too, I suppose.” She said without any emotion. I wasn’t going to let her not even smile at me. I’m Joe Jonas for goodness sakes! I vowed right then and there that I would get this girl to loosen up and possibly fall for me, another huge mistake.
“Well miss negativity,” I started, trying to think of a way to get her to laugh, “You live around here?”
“Not quite.” She said looking at me with annoyance in her eyes. “My father owns this park and a few other places around here. I come here in the summer to help out, relax, get a tan.”
“Oh interesting.” I said giving her a smile. “Where are you from then?”
“Not that it’s any of your business, but I’m from Chicago.” She said. I looked into her eyes. Her beautiful blue eyes.
“Wow.” I said out loud about her eyes, “I mean, cool.”
“What about you, Mr. Smiles?” She asked, her mouth almost formed a smile. “Where are you from?”
“Well, not that it’s any of your business,” I said stealing her line, “but I’m from New Jersey.”
“Joe? It’s our turn to go!” Frankie shouted trying to lift the big tube. I had forgotten about him.
“Sorry Frankie, come on over here I’d like you to meet someone.” I said calling him over.
“Awe, and what’s your name?” Kristin said smiling at Frankie. She was smiling at Frankie?! No wonder he was The Man, I thought.
“I’m Frankie, but you can just call me The Man.” Frankie said trying to be cool. The truth is, he was doing a good job at it. Kristin laughed. Oh her laugh, it had to have been the most amazing sound I had ever heard in my life.
“Well, ‘The Man’,” Kristin started, “You are the cutest, or should I say, most handsome boy I have seen in a long time.” She smiled at him again. Well if she liked Frankie, he could be my ticket to spend some time with her so she can fall for me, I thought.
“Well Kristin,” I started, “Frankie and I were wondering if you would like to come with us to get something to eat and spend the day with us. You wanna?”
“Well it does sound tempting.” She said smiling, at Frankie, of course. “You know what? I’d love to.” In my head all I heard was ‘I love you.’
“I love you, too.” I said quietly.
“What?” She said. Hopefully she didn’t hear that.
“Um, I said I’d love to, too.” I smiled at her. She was so beautiful.
“Can I please ride the slide now?” Frankie asked. His voice sounded like he was bored and wanted to ride the slide really badly.
“Sure, how about you two go down the slide and I’ll close it up, up here.” Kristin said, looking at me, finally.
“Sounds good.” I said to her. “Come on Frank, let’s do this thing.” I lifted up the tube and set it into the water. Frankie sat down in the front of the double tube and I sat in the back.
“See you boys at the bottom.” Kristin said waving at us as we headed down the slide into the darkness. If only we would have stayed there.
