The song for this songfic is The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson. If you haven't heard the song I sugest you do. =] Also this is for Corinne because she rocks!
If you were falling, then I would catch you
You need a light, I'd find a match
Laughter could be heard from a distance from within the empty cabin. It continued to grow louder and louder until finally the culprits busted through the door.
Tears of joy were cascading down both of their brown eyes and continued falling as Corinne slipped. The ice on the bottom of her boots not agreeing with the wooden floors.
“Careful.” Joe said grabbing hold of her arm to steady her. Even through their coats sparks seemed to issue through them at the contact. They were only friends, but they both secretly wished for something more.
They were both standing there staring into each others eyes. Eventually Corinne had to turn away because the intensity was becoming too much. Joe drew back his hand as they stood in awkward silence.
“It’s a little dark in here.” Corinne said trying to make out shapes in the cabins dark interior.
“Wait, I brought matches.” Joe said smiling as he dug into his backpack. Eventually he found them and held them up triumphantly. He quickly walked over to a table and lit the candle that sat upon it. He made his way to a few more places throughout the room and eventually light began to overpower the darkness.
“Wow…” Corinne said as she gazed around the room. “It is just like it used to be.”
“Yeah,” Joe said smiling at the wonder in her eyes, “Remember all the summers and winter breaks we would spend up here?”
“I will never forget those times.” Corinne said as she set her backpack down upon the cold floor.
She went over and sat on the couch as Joe set to work on lighting a fire in the furnace. Eventually he had one going, but it had taken longer than it would normally due to the dampness of the wood.
Turning around, he walked over to Corinne only to find her asleep. Joe couldn’t help stare at the beauty and innocence before him. Her blonde hair was falling into her face and her lips were slightly pouted. If Joe had thought she was beautiful before, nothing compared to how she looked now.
Yawning, he walked over and picked her up with great care. He went to a side room and laid her upon her old bed. He quietly walked to the door. When he glanced back, it took a great deal of effort for Joe not to walk back over there and kiss her.
Cause I love the way you say good morning
And you take me the way I am
“Good morning sunshine.” Joe said drinking a cup of coffee.
Corrine couldn’t help but giggle at Joe as she helped herself to a cup as well. Once she did another giggle escaped her lips as she saw him reading the comics in the newspaper. She loved he was still a kid at heart.
They both sat there in silence as they drank their coffee. Corinne sipped at her coffee, while she stared at him. She had seen him countless times before, but she couldn’t help but be intrigued by the person before her. He had a certain air around him that just screamed crazy, random, funny and Joe and she wouldn’t take him any other way.
If you are chilly, here take my sweater
Your head is aching, I'll make it better
Cause I love the way you call me baby
And you take me the way I am
Corinne and Joe spent the day playing all the old games they would play when they were younger. They played everything from clue to monopoly to poker. It wasn’t the same playing without Joe’s family, but that didn’t stop their fun.
Night was approaching fast, bringing the cold with it. The furnace was running but Corinne was still shivering. Joe noticed this and he took off his sweater which he placed over her. She refused, but he wouldn’t let her take it off.
They both were sitting there, sipping hot chocolate, remembering all the good times they shared at the cabin. Eventually Corrine’s head started hurting. She tried to hide it from Joe, but he caught on soon enough.
“No it’s nothing.” Corinne said, trying not to ruin their moment. They were so content and peaceful, and she didn’t want her headache taking that away.
“Yes it is.” Joe quickly got up and ran towards the medicine cabinet. He also made a detour at the kitchen for a glass of water. Pretty soon he was back and helping Corinne lay down. “Here take this.” Joe said as he handed her the drink and pill.
He sat there watching her the rest of the night until she fell asleep. However, not before she overheard him saying, “It’s going to be alright baby.”
I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair
Sew on patches to all you tear
Over the next few days, their desire for one another couldn’t hide. Neither would outright say it nor acknowledge it, but they both knew it was there. It was there amongst the flirting and the cuddling for ‘warmth’.
Again, they both found themselves sitting on the couch. If Corinne was any closer to Joe, they might as well have been one person.
Twirling a piece of his hair, Corinne said, “So what are you going to do when you grow old and start losing all of your hair?”
“Well, maybe my wife will have to buy me some Rogaine.” Joe said staring straight into her eyes.
“She might be too busy. You are Danger after all so she is probably going to be busy sewing on patches to all of your skinny jeans.” Corinne stated holding his gaze.
Joe was about to say something back, but decided against it. Instead he closed the space between them as he placed a gentle kiss upon her lips.
Cause I love you more than I could ever promise
And you take me the way I am
You take me the way I am
You take me the way I am
