Chapter Three (By Trista):
We were running ahead, our legs pumping as we raced towards our terminal. My suitcase was banging against my leg and I knew that I was developing a bruise. Yet, I kept running as Kevin’s voice became audible above all the noise. “Joe! We’re going to miss the plane! Wrap it up!!” “What has Joe done this time?” I mumble under my breath. We get to the gate. Everyone else is there, except for Kevin and Joe. I turn around just in time to see Kevin grabbing Joe by the arm and dragging him over. Taking a deep breath in, Kevin gets ready to shout at Joe. “How many-!“ “Attention passengers of flight 300, LA to New Jersey. Due to bad weather conditions, the flight has been delayed until further notice. Please remain at the terminal for further announcements. Thank-you.”
“Wow, i can’t believe we ran so much for nothing,” Joe said. “WE wouldn’t have had to run so much if you weren’t so interested in your hair. Gosh Joe, get your priorities right,” Kevin snapped back. “Calm down, Kevin. No need to get so mad about it. The flight’s already delayed, what can we do?” Dad said, not wanting a fight to break out. “Yeah Kevin, no need to get your knickers in a knot.” “And you Joe,” Dad turned to him, “You knew we had a flight early so why didn’t you get up? You’re old enough to get organised yourself. I do agree with Kevin, hair should be the least of your worries right now.” Kevin smirked at Joe. “Whatever,” Joe mumbled, walking over and taking a seat next to me. Everyone else wanders off to find food, hungry from all the running.
I look at Joe. His eyes look glassy, as if he’s in a different place.
“Helloo Joooe!” I wave my hand in front of his face. No reply. Weird, I think to myself.
“Joe!”
“What, what Nick?”
“What’s up?” I ask.
“Umm.. the roof?”
“Haha, no. Why so far away?”
“What are you talking about? I’m right here.”
I sigh. I seriously wonder if I’m even related to Joe sometimes.
“What are you day dreaming about?”
“Ella,” he says, his eyes lighting up with just the mention of the name.
“Who’s that?”
“An angel, truly sent from heaven.”
“Okay now you’re scaring me.”
“Her blonde curls, her emerald eyes. She is an angel.”
He leans back, his eyes closed as he dreams of this Ella person.
“Please explain?” I ask hesitantly, somewhat afraid of the answer.
“Well, she was the reason Kevin yelled at me while we were running. I bashed into her-,”
“Smooth Joe, real smooth.”
“Shut up. Yeah, I ran into her and as soon as I looked into her eyes, her green eyes, eyes like emeralds, that sparkle in the-“
“Yeah I get it her eyes are pretty, continue?”
“I knew she was the one. Our hands brushed as we were getting our suitcases and I got a tingle up my spine. I never get tingles, Nick, never! I need to see that girl again.”
“Well, good luck with that” I smile and turn away.
Something is seriously wrong with Joe. He’s only looked at the girl, exchanged little words with this Ella girl and already he’s head over heels. I hope he never does meet this Ella person again because the way he’s acting now, the girl will be scared for life. I mean, he’s calling her an angel!
After half an hour we get called to board the plane after the rain in New Jersey clears up. I sit in my seat, closest to the window, with Joe next to me and Kevin in front. The silence between us is, well, awkward.
“Wow,” Kevin says, trying to make conversation,” I feel really uncomfortable in this seat. I think its been elevated or something.”
“Ella?” Joe perks up.
“What?” Kevin asks, a confused look on his face.
After looking around frantically, Joe finally sits still in his seat.
“Ella isn’t here,” he says sadly.
Kevin turns to me, waiting for an explanation.
“Long story, tell you later.”
“This is your captain speaking. We will be making a brief stopover in Texas before continuing on to our destination, New Jersey. Please buckle up your seatbelts and get ready for lift off. Enjoy your flight.”
I sit back, hoping that Joe’s “Ella phase” will wear off sometime soon.
