Ren's birthday is July 14th. This means I have limited time to write this fic for her. But she's worth that and more.
If you guys aren't interested that's fine. I love you all.
Enjoy!
Time to drive my car too fast
Time to walk before I run
-Time To Be Your 21 (Alexz Johnson)
How it happened was a blur to the two involved. The screeching of the tires, the metal clanging as the cars collided. It was an accident, it was a disaster. It was destiny. The horrific sounds of the crash ended as quickly and suddenly as they began, and silence rang through the site. For moments the only sounds were those of crickets and birds chirping loudly as the sun set slowly, the sultry summer air growing slightly cooler with every passing moment. A squirrel ran into the road, sniffing the air with interest and tilting its head to the side as it took in the scene before him.
A gray car was idling on one side of the road. Front end smashed and paint from the red jeep on the other side of the road it looked completely beyond repair. The jeep was in much better condition, the front end only dinged up slightly, gray shining on top of the red. The squirrel sat in the middle of the road, unsure what to do. He was startled and ran into hiding when a loud groan rang out from the jeep. The groan was met with more of its kind as the driver slowly adjusted to his surroundings. He cut off the ignition with shaking hands, rubbing the blood and sweat gathered on his brow with a shudder. He sent a prayer in thanks that he was relatively unharmed before he noticed the gray car across the road.
Any worry he had for himself quickly faded as he stepped out of his vehicle, not even bothering to close the door. He walked over slowly, fearful for what he could see, but knowing that he needed to find out if the person behind the wheel was okay. He saw lots of red and immediately panicked before a closer glance proved to him that it was hair. Thick, red hair covered the face of the driver. She (because he could tell that the other driver was a woman) was slumped in her seat, the safety belt cutting into her pale skin slightly. He shook her gently while fumbling for his cell phone. He hoped it was in his pocket and not in his jeep a few feet away. He needed to be ready to call for help should the woman be in worse shape than he could determine.
She stirred before he could find his phone, her green eyes dazed and mouth open in a state of shock and confusion. He wanted to speak to her, to ask if she was alright but she was already glancing around in fear. Her eyes met his; hazel meeting muted green that might be considered dull by some but he found himself drawn to her. He didn’t think it could be the adrenaline from the crash causing these feelings. He wanted to help her.
He reached out for her but she flinched away, shaking her head as she slowly got out of her car. She began to walk slowly away, mumbling slightly under her breath. He noticed her purse and other belongings were still in the idling car and he chased after her, wondering what she was running from.
“Wait!” He called, surprised at the emotion and forcefulness in his voice. This seemed to shake her out of her shock and she collapsed on the gravel road, tears streaming down her face. Calling for help wasn’t an option as he realized the only person that could help her at this moment in time was him. She was uninjured physically but the crash seemed to break something inside of her. He couldn’t explain how he knew this, but instincts took over as he sat down next to her and wrapped his arms around her. She leaned into him, face nuzzled into his collarbone as she cried.
After a few moments he couldn’t tell whose tears were soaking his shirt as he himself cried. The hidden emotions and feelings of depression he didn't even know he possessed were unleashing themselves on that lonely gravel road in the small Georgia town he was just passing through. He heard his phone ring but ignored it, knowing it was one of his brothers wondering why he hadn’t made it to the hotel yet. His parents would soon be calling but he would ignore that too. He needed to be here with this unknown woman, holding her as they both released themselves of their frustrations and pain.
“What’s your name?” He heard her ask as she slowly pulled away from him, watery smile on her face. He could tell she was attempting to smile to make light of the situation they were in. The gravity of it seemed to hit him and he looked back at their vehicles in worry. The fault of the accident was unknown to him but he was willing to take responsibility for it. He heard his phone ring once more and he knew they needed to take care of their problem.
“I’m Kevin,” he said, not used to having to introduce himself to someone who didn’t already know his name. “Kevin Jonas.” He saw her face light up in recognition, a blush rising on her cheeks. He knew that look and realized she was a fan.
“I’m Ren.” She said, shaking off her nervousness as she stood up, offering her hand to pull him up as well. “Lauren actually, but it’s weird to hear people call me that. I don’t even respond to it.” The two exchanged conversation for a few moments, getting the necessary information from each other before he offered her a ride in his jeep. She gave him a small smile before nodding as they walked back to her vehicle to stop the engine and gather her belongings.
As the slightly banged up jeep pulled away, the cause of the accident stood in the middle of the road once more, the sun setting behind him as he took in the scene for a moment before racing to his chosen tree for a good night’s sleep.
