               In the Nick of Time (Nick One Shot)
    The door to a family bathroom in a fancy hotel flew open. Nick froze. He stood behind a closed door of a stall fixing a tie he was wearing in the mirror. He listened as a girl that sounded no older than him cry out for help. From what he could tell she had been crying. And now that  she thought she was alone she seemed to be crying even more.
    “I can do this, …I can do this” The breaks in her sentences reassured him that she was crying as hard as she could. “I can’t do this!” She coughed. It sounded like all the crying she was doing was making her throw up. What could have a girl so worked up? He thought about going to assist her but waited. The bathroom door swung open again. This time it sounded like an older women, he was guessing her mother.
    “Get out there, your guest are waiting.” The mother implied to her without a hint of compassion for the girls condition.
    “They’re your guest! I didn’t invite them, any of them you did all this!” She was yelling in between  tears running down her face and sniffling. SMACK. Nick cringed as he heard the mother take her hand over the girls face. He didn’t know why he didn’t move.
    “Why don’t you get out there.” The mother yelled even louder.
    “I don’t love him!” She yelled back. Nick heard another smack. He cringed. The girl seemed to fall to the floor.
    “You’re a fool Ann. A flat out fool.” He mother said as she left the bathroom. He heard the girl continue to cry on the floor. Nick took a deep breath, he had to help her. He pushed open the stall door. The girl jump when she saw him there. Nick jumped himself when he saw the girl was in a wedding dress all done up ready to get married. He was still shocked by how old she looked. She couldn’t have been older than 18. She looked up with tears in her eyes. She put her head back down and asked a question he would never forget.
    “Did you hear all that?” She asked wiping her eyes.
    “ Yeah, everything from you trying to convince yourself that you can do this.” He said and squatted down so that he was at her level. He reached out his had to help her up. When he was at this level he could see the growing welt marks where the mothers had had gone across her face. She extended her hand to his. “I’m Nick.” He said as the both rose.
    “Annie.” She said flattening out her dress. “Or what looks like her at least.”
    “What’s going on you and your mother both don’t seem very happy?” Nick said as he picked up a flower that had fallen from her flowers she was holding.
    “Umm.. I guess to make a long story short I don’t want to marry the guy who is standing on a stage right now. And he is probably wondering where his bride is.” She said almost bringing a smile to her face when she realized Nick kind of chuckled at her last statement.
    “Why on earth would she make you do that?” Nick said trying to comfort her but not rub salt in open wounds.
    “It’s a money thing, she arranged it with his parents. I can’t marry someone I don’t love. I would never be happy. Do you understand that?” She asked.
    “Yeah, love isn’t something that someone can create, it creates itself between two people.” Nick said.
    “Yeah.” She said as she smiled. “Yeah my thought exactly.” Annie agreed. “Wow I feel really stupid right now.”
    “Don’t,  umm.. do you like coffee?”
    “I do.”
    Annie brought herself back to reality. She looked across the church at all the smiling people. Then she looked across from her. There holding her hands was Nick. Her flash back ran into the one of the only things she was suppose to say. She listened now as Nick replied “I do.” She smiled. This was a wedding not a day she thought her life was ending, like the first time she stood up here. No, her life was just beginning. All of her intense think was ended. She smiled as she heard the words she had been waiting for.
    “You may kiss the Bride.” The Preacher said. Nick leaned over and kissed her. She wrapped her hands around the back of his head. His words rang in her head from the first day he met her. “Love isn’t something that someone can create, it creates itself between two people.” Nick saved her in the Nick of time.
