Chapter~2
“Nick, you’re goalie.” I said to my brother. It was me, Nick, Kevin, and Garbo out on the ice. We invited Garbo to come with us to the game since it’s his home team too and he thought it would be fun to play hockey where the pros did. Nick and I were on a team, and Garbo and Kevin were a team.
“Sounds good to me.” Nick said as he skated down to the goal.
“You ready little brother?” Kevin asked me. Garbo was their teams’ goalie so Kevin was their offence.
“I’ve been ready for thirty five years.” I said with a serious tone but trying to be funny. Kevin laughed. I looked to my left. My dad stood there holding a hockey puck.
“Alright boys,” He started, holding his whistle close to his mouth. He counted to three and then blew it as he dropped the puck.
About an hour later we were just about done playing. Me and Nick’s team, which we had named The Ninja Squad X-Force, (don’t ask), had beaten Kevin and Garbo’s team, The Muffin Line (once again, don’t ask), by a score of eight to one. I had scored all of our eight goals, and the one that Kevin scored was only because he tripped me and Nick wasn’t paying attention because he was laughing at me. Yeah, you could say I was a pretty beast like hockey player, and apparently Michel Therrien thought so too.
“Excuse me,” Michel said to me. I was sitting down on the ice starting to take off my gloves and helmet. I was sweating pretty badly. I was tired too.
“Yeah?” I asked after I had taken a drink of water.
“My name’s Michel Therrien. I’m the coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. I was watching you play and you’re pretty good.” he said. I looked up at him. Was I really that good? Good enough for him to think so?
“Well, thank you sir.” I said with a surprised tone to my voice, “I’m honored that you think so. You obviously know good players when you see them, your team is amazing.”
“Well your very welcome, and thank you.” he said with a slight smile. “Have you ever played ice hockey before?”
“Well, not professionally.” I said thinking of how I used to play with some of my friends as a kid.
“I’m surprised not. How would you like to come to Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh and practice a little with the team, and possibly play in some games?” He asked me smiling. Was he serious? Of course I wanted to. I thought of a clever way to answer.
“H-E-double hockey sticks yeah!” I said smiling. Coach Therrien laughed.
“A great hockey player with a great sense of humor,” he started, “You will fit in very nicely with the rest of the team.”
“Thank you sir.” I said. “My manager a.k.a. dad is back out in the locker room with my brothers if you need to talk to him.”
“Will do.” He said with a smile on his face. He walked off the ice and back into the locker room. I couldn’t believe it. I was going to be a hockey player in the NHL. Who would have guessed?
