Comments rock my world =]
“Hey honey, will you get me something to eat?” I asked my husband, Nick. We were sitting in the back of the tour bus, just hanging out, and I was now 9 months pregnant, due in 2 weeks. We were on our way back to our Los Angeles home, and would be there in 2 more days.
“Sure. What do you want?” Nick asked, standing up.
“Oreos please” I requested, and Nick left to go get them.
“So, how are you feeling?” Jen, my brother-in-law, Joe’s, wife asked me.
“Great! Baby keeps kicking” I said, rubbing my stomach.
Jen smiled. “Just 2 more weeks”
“I know! October 7th, hurry up!” I laughed.
“You and Nick are going to make great parents” Jen told me.
“Thanks” I smiled. “So will you and Joe”
Jen had just found out she was pregnant. She was 6 weeks.
“Thanks” Jen smiled.
All of the sudden, I had this weird feeling, something I hadn’t felt before.
My heart started to go a little faster, and a weird feeling filled my body.
“Oh My God” I said.
“What? What’s wrong?” Jen asked, looking up from her magazine.
“It’s time” I told her.
“What?!” Jen gasped, jumping up.
“Like, I’m going to have the baby” I said.
“Oh My God.” She gasped.
“I know” I said.
“Okay, breath, in and out” Jen told me, and I began to breath quickly.
“NICK!” I yelled for my husband.
“What?” He came back in.
“We have to get to the hospital” I told him.
“Why?” he asked. He was clueless.
“I’m about to have our baby” I told him.
Nick’s eyes got huge.
“Wait? Baby? No, what? Not for 2 weeks? What? But, wait, what? He stuttered.
“She’s early!” Jen told him.
“Oh My God” Nick said, and ran over to me, grabbing my hand.
“Alright, you’re a doctor, you’ve delivered babies before, what do we do?” Nick asked Jen.
“Well, let’s get to a hospital” Jen told him, in a duh-tone.
“What’s going on?” Joe asked, sitting down next to his wife.
“I’m going to give birth” I told him.
“What?” He asked.
Were all men this clueless? What was so hard to believe that I was about to have mine and Nick’s first child?
“She’s going to have a baby” Jen practically yelled at him.
Kevin came running into the back lounge.
“Did you just say that Alyssa is about to have a baby?” he asked.
“YES! Ask the driver how far away we are from a hospital” Jen said.
“Okay” Kevin said, and ran back to the front of the tour bus.
“What’s going on?” Teresa, Kevin’s wife, came back to join us.
“Lyss is going to have our baby” Nick said.
“Oh my gosh, seriously?” she asked.
“Yes” I said.
“Um, guys…” Kevin came back to us.
“What?” I asked. I needed to get to a hospital.
“We’re 2 hours away from any hospital” he said.
“What?!” I screamed.
“It’s okay baby. It’s okay.” Nick told me.
“I can’t hang on that long” I said.
“What? You have to” Nick said.
“Baby, I can’t” I said, squeezing his hand a little. “I’m going to have this baby”
“Oh. My. God” Joe said.
“Okay.” Jen said. “Joe, go get some towels, Kevin, scissors, and if anyone can find gloves, that’d be great.”
“Wh-“ Nick started to say.
“Your wife is having a baby, and she’s going to have it here” Jen told him.
I shrieked. “Oh My God”
I was feeling it.
“Okay, baby, breath.” Nick said, and started breathing like I should.
“I think I’m going to faint. What do we do?” Nick started to panic a little.
Teresa slapped him across the face. “Pay attention to Lyss”
“Right” Nick snapped to attention.
Joe came back with some towels, followed by Kevin with scissors.
“Sorry, no gloves” Kevin told Jen.
“It’s fine.” Jen said, spreading some towels out on the floor.
“Alyssa, let’s get you down here” Nick said, helping me onto the floor.
“Oh My God” I said again. The baby was coming.
“Okay, okay. Just keep breathing” Jen told me. “Nick, you stay there with her. Teresa, you get onto the other side of her” Jen directed.
“Joe, you help me here, and Kevin, uh, go and tell the driver to hurry it up” she said, and everyone went where they were supposed to.
“Oh! Here are gloves!” Kevin ran back, a first aid kit in one hand and 2 pairs of gloves in the other. “There are extra gloves in there if needed”
“Thanks Kevin” Jen said, handing a pair to Joe, and putting a pair on herself.
Joe stared at the gloves, and then at his wife. “You’re helping”
“What?” Joe stuttered.
“Joe” Jen sighed. “I need your help. Alyssa needs your help”
Joe looked at me. “Okay.”
“Alright, Lyss, just push okay” Jen told me.
I squeezed onto my 22-year old husband’s hand, and my brother-in-law’s 27- year- old wife’s hand.
“Push” Nick kept telling me. “You’re doing fine. Push”
“It’s okay Alyssa. You’ve got it. Just push.” Teresa said. Teresa had done this already once before. She and Kevin have one daughter, Madison Grace, who’s 2 years old.
Nick was being better than I thought he would. I thought he would’ve passed out already, to be completely honest.
He was amazing.
“Push!” Jen said again. “Push!”
“Oh My God” Joe said breathlessly, and collapsed to the ground.
I shrieked. “JOE!”
“Baby, it’s fine, he’s fine. Just keep pushing” Nick told me, ignoring his older brother who’d just fainted.
Jen was starring at Joe, and then snapped to attention. “He’s right. Joe will be fine. Push!”
Kevin came back into the lounge, starring at Joe. “Uh, do you want me to do something about that?”
“Get him some water and then get some gloves on” Jen told him.
“Okay” Kevin said, and returned a minute later with a glass of water.
Joe awakened a few minutes later, and sat in the corner.
Imagine what he’d be like while his own wife gave birth to their child.
“Alright, push” Kevin told me after he’d put his gloves on.
The phone in the back lounge began to ring, and Joe answered it.
“Guys, we’re kinda stuck in traffic, and won’t be able to get to the hospital for 1 hour and 45 minutes” Joe said.
“I don’t care!” I screamed, and kept pushing.
“It’s alright. You’re okay” Teresa told me.
An hour and a half later, Jen finally gave some more news of how I was doing.
“Okay, almost there.” She said as I kept pushing.
“Alright, okay, you’re good” Kevin told me, and Jen wrapped mine and Nick’s new baby in a warm blanket Joe had gotten.
“You did it” Nick told me, kissing me lightly.
“Yes, I did” I said breathlessly, and kissed him back. “We’re parents”
Nick smiled. “I know”
Jen handed me our baby, and I held our newborn daughter in my arms.
“She’s beautiful” Nick whispered.
“She’s perfect” I said.
“Welcome to the world, our beautiful baby girl” Nick said.
It wasn’t the way I imagined it would be.
I didn’t think I’d be so early.
I didn’t think I’d give birth in a tour bus, with my in-laws helping me.
But all of those things, made it all the more special.
