Ch 3
"Where's Kev?" Joe asked slipping his new ray ban sunglasses off of his face and placing them on the top of his head. Since the sunglasses brand had came on board as a sponsor, Joe never left his at home.
"He's not here yet." Frankie, the youngest of the four brothers replied. "Mom doesn't think he'll show up and she's upset, but she won't admit it." he shrugged
"Oh Joey, I thought you said he'd be here." Alison, Joe's girlfriend sighed.
It was somewhat of a tradition for the entire Jonas family to gather at the house of Kevin and Denise Jonas for dinner every once a week, providing racing allowed it. Ever since Kevin Sr's older brother, Phil, had given little Kevin a go kart at the age of six the family had been involved in racing. Starting out it was easy for the family to pack up and go from track to track; it was a real family event.
Once Kevin made it into Nascar and Nick made the choice that he too wanted to race, the family got divided with racing. Now that he was getting older, Frankie was starting to get interested more and more in the idea of being a driver himself. He was currently racing one of Kevin and Nick's old legend cars and looking for a full time sponsor.
Dinners were now the only time the family could be in one place, at one time, but they didn't work as well if certain members were missing.
"He told Nick he would be." Joe replied with a shrug. "I'm not Kev, I didn't talk to him today."
"What's wrong with him?" Alison let her thoughts go out loud. "If he doesn't show up tonight, it'll upset your mother so bad. This is the third dinner that Kevin hasn't showed for."
"If he doesn't show, you can be the one to talk to him. We've tried." Frankie added with a heavy sigh. He didn't understand his oldest brother, Kevin had everything, yet he still acted like a major jerk.
Maybe having everything is what caused Kevin to be the way he was.
"He's just going through a rough patch." Joe defended.
The looks he got from Frankie and Alison told him they didn't want to hear it, that was Joe always defending Kevin. Even if Kevin only saw Joe as a crew chief and not so much as a brother any more, Joe was the first to defend Kevin's so called honour.
"We're here!" Nick's voice rang through the house, as the door shut behind him.
"Hey man." Joe greeted his brother with a nod, as Nick and his girlfriend joined the other three in the living room. "Lizzie." he gave her a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek, knowing it would annoy Nick.
"Where's Kev?" Nick asked automatically, pulling Lizzie closer to his side and glaring at Joe.
"Your guess is as good as ours." Alison shook her head.
Nick shook his head and took a seat in his favourite reclining chair next to the television. "Kev's been a major jerk lately, I don't get it. Racing has been an issue, but he's never been like this before."
"Pacer is on him something wicked, Kev needs to relax." Joe once again defended.
Getting out of his new top of the line dodge pickup truck, Kevin let the door close with a heavy thud and stalked toward the modest two storied house that sat on a well kept lawn, with a garage and a fence around it. Kevin hated this house, mostly because it wasn't the family home, when he moved to North Carolina to race his parents insisted on selling their home in New Jersey and moving as well. One thing his parents had promised was to keep the family's home, little did that last.
Not bothering to knock or ring the door bell, Kevin opened the front door. Inside he had to admit, smelled great and the air was warm and friendly. He could hear his brothers down the hall yelling at one another, probably over a video game. From the kitchen came the sound of metal clanging, probably pots and pans.
Slamming the front door Kevin walked in muttering a string of curses that would make a sailor blush. Tossing his jacket onto the table in the hall way, he kicked his boots off and dropped his keys onto his jacket.
"Someone's in a mood." his mother greeted him at the door. "Are things okay hunny?"
"Freakin fine!" Kevin forced a smile, giving her a quick but cold hug
Brushing past his mother, Kevin went in search of Joe. After seeing Joe at his house a few days ago, the two brothers hadn't talked since. The two had to have a chat and they had to have it soon.
"He doesn't want me back!" Kevin announced the second he saw Joe sitting in the living room. "I get two more races in the car and I am out. He could have at least waited until next season, but I'm gone! My contract isn't up until the end of the season."
"Do I expect a call?" Joe questioned, shocked by Kevin's outburst, the news not so much.
"No, you're calling him and telling him, that if I go you're coming with me." Kevin said, pointing a finger at Joe. "Tomorrow would be nice to do so."
"I can't leave my job." Joe argued
"You can and you're going to." Kevin demanded. "If I have to go to a new team, you're coming."
"If Kev doesn't get a ride, I need a new crew chief, dad is driving me nuts. He worries too much." Frankie piped up, only to receive a glare from Nick who was silently warning him to keep his mouth shut.
Each one of the boys knew when and where to speak, when one of their brothers was having an off day. If Joe and Kevin were into it, like now, then it was best to walk away and say nothing to either one. Ushering Frankie out of the living room, Nick shoved the youngest boy into the kitchen where everyone else was.
"So he's letting you go?" Joe asked, his voice quiet
"Yeah, I called to talk about contracts, he told me not to bother he was letting me go." Kevin replied with a shrug and a groan. "I'm a race car driver Joe, it's what I do!"
"Look we'll talk to Pacer tomorrow. We'll talk him down and if he won't budge, we find a new team." Joe suggested, slapping Kevin on the back. "Now, in the mean time dinner is ready."
"Yes, it is." their mother spoke from around the corner. "I was just coming to get you two. Now, let's have a nice dinner, with no racing mentioned." she smiled pointing at her two oldest sons.
"Aww mom." Kevin and Joe both pouted and whined.
