Chapter 15:
“C’mere, Ariel,” Joe cooed, getting down on all fours and beckoning the puppy to come. Ariel perked up and slowly started to hobble over to him. Joe put his chin down on the floor in front of the puppy and she came up and licked his nose. Ariel playfully growled at Joe and Joe growled back, causing Ariel to whip around and come scrambling back to Alyssa’s feet.
“Joseph,” Alyssa laughed, glaring jokingly at Joe and picking Ariel up off the floor and placing her in her lap, “don’t scare my dog.”
“I didn’t. I’m not that scary,” he pouted defensively at me and Alyssa before turning to his girlfriend and exaggerating the pout even more. “Am I?” he asked Sierra.
“No comment,” Sierra giggled.
“Psh! Fine!” Joe yelled before standing up and walking over to the couch where Sierra was sitting. He sat on the opposite end of the couch with his arms folded and a fake pout on his face.
“Joe! Get back over here!” Sierra screamed, mimicking Joe’s stance.
Joe beamed. “Okay,” he gave in, scooting over to Sierra and planting a gentle kiss on her lips.
“You guys are ridiculous,” Nick laughed, exchanging an annoyed glance with Madeline.
“You’re just jealous, man,” Joe said, not taking his eyes off a beaming Sierra.
“How could I be?” Nick said, pulling Madeline closer to him and kissing the top of her head.
“Because you’re not as cool as us, admit it,” Joe spat, laughing.
“Okay,” Alyssa demanded, “I think that’s enough of that.”
I laughed at her initiative to take control of ending the absurd situation and pulled her closer as she continued to lean against my chest and stroke Ariel’s ears.
We were sitting in Alyssa’s family room, me and Alyssa on one couch, Joe and Sierra on the other, and Nick and Madeline squished into a reclining La-Z-Boy chair. We had just watched The Wedding Singer and had eaten a Hawaiian-luau inspired dinner that Nick, Joe and I had slaved over in the kitchen. It was actually pretty good, if you ignore slightly burnt shish kabobs. Now, we were just talking and enjoying each others company before me and my brothers had to leave our girlfriends yet again.
“Didn’t you say you guys had a surprise for us?” Madeline asked, looking into Nick’s eyes timidly.
Nick nodded and smiled softly at her, “Yeah, I believe we did.”
“Another surprise?” Alyssa asked, sitting up and turning to look at me. “You didn’t tell me about this other surprise,” she exclaimed, a confused look in her brown eyes.
“What? Kevin, roses, a luau dinner, a movie, and a new dog aren’t enough surprises for you?” Joe asked sarcastically, causing Sierra to elbow him in the ribs.
“Ouch!” Joe said, pouting a Sierra and rubbing his sore side.
Alyssa looked down at Ariel, petting the puppy that was sound asleep on her lap. She was clearly a little embarrassed after what Joe had said to her, even if it was a joke.
“Alyssa, it’s okay,” Nick said comfortingly. “Ignore him.”
“Yeah,” I said, pulling her back into my chest and kissing her on the top of the head. “Do you girls want to know that surprise now, then?” I asked, knowing the answer.
Sierra and Madeline nodded eagerly and Alyssa looked up at me and gave me a small smile, still seeming a little embarrassed.
“Well, according to your parents, you all don’t have anything planned for Spring Break, right?” Joe asked, smiling mischievously.
“Right,” Sierra shrieked, getting excited.
“Well, now you do,” Nick said, smiling at Madeline.
“What?!” Alyssa sat up and looked into my eyes. I leaned forward and kissed her gently. “We’re bringing you to LA to spend Spring Break with us,” I said after pulling away.
The girls all squealed and Alyssa put her hand on the back of my neck and kissed me again.
“I love you,” she whispered.
“I love you more,” I whispered back, kissing her again.
