From Up Above
Nick Jonas was in love. Yes, he was in love with his music and family and life, but he was also in love with a girl. Julia Rose astounded Nick the first time he laid eyes on her. Her light brown hair fell in slight curls around her shoulders, accenting her sparkling blue eyes. Julia’s smile and laugh made her face glow and her eyes sparkle even more. Nick was with his younger brother at a coffee shop in Texas when he first heard her laugh. She was sitting with two other girls, Charloett with long, black hair and Nora with wavy, dark blond hair. Julia threw her head back as she laughed at something one of the other girls said, catching Nick’s attention. The world seemed to move in slow motion as he watched the beautiful girl laugh. He noticed her friends were attractive too, but nothing in comparison to the girl with light brown hair. Nick fell into a trance as he watched the stunning girl interact with her friends. Only a jab from Frankie brought his attention to the barista that was asking for his drink order. Nick ordered his usual, too entranced by the girl’s beauty to focus on anything. After he received his drink, he felt he had to speak to her before it was too late. He stumbled over his words, but she did not seem to care. He asked her if she wanted to go out for dinner and she accepted his offer. Nick was 20 then, Julia just a few months younger than he was.
Four years had passed since the two met. Julia had attended UCLA and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies while Nick continued to develop his musical career with his older brothers. To everyone that knew them, Julia Rose and Nick were the perfect couple. The couple got along amazingly well and could compromise with each other better than many married couples. Julia fit into the Jonas family so well, it was as if she were a long lost family member. Kevin and Joe, Nick’s older brothers, treated Julia like a little sister. Julia was a bridesmaid in Kevin’s wedding to his long time love Meg. Joe’s fiancée, Ashleigh, was planning to have Julia be a bridesmaid in their wedding as well.
While Nick’s older brothers were settling down, he was just starting to want a family. He and Julia had discussed many times what type of family they wanted. She wanted two or three kids that she would raise in an average sized house during her breaks from acting. Nick wanted at least three kids who would have the opportunity to live a normal childhood in a nice neighborhood while attending a private school. Nick had promised he would always be around for Julia and she returned the promise. At 24 years old, both Julia and Nick had saved enough money from their careers to settle down and start a family.
Nick had wanted to propose to Julia for nearly a year, and was finally sure they both had the financial security to be on their own. Nick’s music career was still doing well, and although the amount of fans the band held had slightly decreased from his teenaged years, there were still enough in each state to sell out shows at theaters and clubs. He had been searching for a week for the perfect engagement ring to give Julia. He was going to propose to her on Christmas day when both of their families got together for dinner.
It was a warm and humid August afternoon in Hollywood when Nick finally found the ring he wanted to give Julia. He had studied a few styles the jewelry store clerk showed him, but none compared to the princess cut diamond ring he first looked at. The center stone was a stunning 2.05 carats and had two smaller diamonds on each side, for a total of five diamonds. Nick thought the ring was perfect; there was one diamond for each year he knew Julia. He smiled at the clerk as she packaged the ring. Nick was finally going to marry the girl that took his breath away, the only one he had really loved. It was going to be a hard four months while he kept the ring a secret from her, but it was something he felt he needed to do.
September rolled around and the Jonas Brothers were taking a break from their club tour to spend time with their families. Kevin and Meg were expecting their second child and Joe and Ashleigh were busy planning their up coming wedding. Julia Rose got her big break and landed a lead role in the movie version of the book Prep. She was busy with rehearsals and filming, but was never alone because Nick always accompanied her to the set.
October arrived and the leaves began to change colors. Nick and Julia Rose spent their days traveling and learning new things together. Frankie started dating Julia, a girl he had been crushing on for a while, so the family never heard the end of how amazing she was. Joe and Ashleigh were finalizing their wedding details and the stress was beginning to set in. Halfway through the month, Julia Rose’s father passed away from a heart attack. She was devastated, but managed to get through the grieving with Nick and his family by her side.
November’s cool air set in and the Jonas family was busy with the last minute details of Joe’s wedding. A week into November and the day everyone had been waiting for arrived. Ashleigh walked down the aisle in a beautiful, flowing gown. Her brown hair was curled and fell gracefully around her shoulders. She stepped down the aisle that was scattered with rose petals with grace. By the end of the service, there was not a dry eye in the chapel. Taking part in Joe’s wedding made Nick even more anxious to propose to Julia Rose. Just another month of waiting, he told himself.
Early in December, not only was Prep released but Ashleigh also announced she was pregnant. Everyone in the family had lively spirits. Julia Rose’s acting career was taking off, Kevin was becoming a father for the second time and Joe for the first time, and Frankie was falling in love with his girlfriend, Julia. Kevin, Joe, and Nick continued to play sold out shows at smaller venues and were still creating amazing music. Christmas and the proposal could not come sooner for Nick.
Julia Rose became a household name after the release of Prep. Not only were people paying attention to her because of the movie, but also because of her relationship with Nick. More paparazzi than ever followed Julia around and she had to enlist a special security agent to keep people back whenever she went out. Like every celebrity, Julia Rose received threats on her life. Some of the threats gave reasons such as not liking that she was dating Nick Jonas, or that she was too ugly. Overall, the majority of the threats were empty threats just meant to scare Julia and her family. Most of the threats were ignored.
On December 18th, Julia was rushed to the hospital after she passed out. Tests were run and the doctors discovered that she had ingested a lethal amount of GHB. Nick’s love was in a comma and doctors did not think she would live. He remained by her bedside for days, listening to the steady blip of the heart monitor. Early in the morning of December 22nd, Nick awoke to the sound of an alarm. Julia’s heart monitor was no longer beeping steadily. Nurses rushed into the room with a doctor by their side. The hear monitor told the room that Julia’s heart was no longer beating. They tried to shock her heart back to life, but nothing worked. Nick bowed his head, praying that his only love would live. He was a part of her life, and without her, Nick was not sure he would be able to move on. The three words the doctor spoke to Nick after silencing the alarm made his heart shatter into millions of pieces: “I’m sorry, son.”

Her light brown hair framed her pale face beautifully. She wore her favorite dress that Nick gave her, a sapphire blue satin dress that fell just above her knees. Nick always told her that it made her blue eyes shine one hundred times brighter. She looked down at her left ring finger. An engagement ring should have been on that finger, but she left him before he could place it on her finger. She let out a small sigh as she adjusted her dress and positioned a few strands of hair that had fallen out of place. She applied one last coat of her and Nick’s favorite lip-gloss; she loved the color and he loved the taste.
She looked down at Nick. There was no light in his eyes, his skin had become pale, and dark bags hung under his eyes. His brothers hung by his side, Joe keeping his arm tight around Nick’s shoulders. Nick walked up to the microphone that stood next to where Julia Rose lay. “Uh- this-this song was Julia’s favorite.” He looked over at her still body, “This is for you, Baby.”
I clear my throat before I grab the mic
I need uno momento
Them cynics gonna ride me like a pinto
No resentment, do you comprehend my innuendo?
You still can’t leave the party ‘til you drop your crucial info.
Am I jaded in assuming that you’re simply bound to do me
Like them other lyricists who’s message ain’t so gloomy?
Pan my positivity cause love has let you down
Cause if they taste the love you tastes
They’d be making sweeter sounds.
Government checks, they flex with no dollars.
Two turntables and a plate full of collards.
Royalty checks reflects with few dollars
But my DJ makes the people wanna holler
Love is in the house and the house is packed
So much so I left the back door cracked
Mama always said it’s a matter of fact
That when love is in the house, the house is packed.
Love is in the house and the house is packed
So much so, I left the back door cracked.
Daddy always said that I wish I was black
And when love is in the house, the house is packed
Packed like a baby nine months in the womb
Man, it was packed like the closet full of Nikes in my room
Singin “oh sweet Lord, take me to the next level
Where the love’s much thicker than the stares of my devils”
So whether or not this is a dream or a reality
Let me appeal to the graces of His majesty
Amazing it will be when this tree bears life
My roots run to the river and the Giver of Life
Corporate jets, they flex with big dollars
Two palm pilots and a room full of bawlers
Royalty checks reflects with few dollars
But amazing grace makes the people wanna holler
Love is in the house and the house is packed
So much so I left the back door cracked
Mama always said it’s a matter of fact
That when love is in the house, the house is packed.
Love is in the house and the house is packed
So much so, I left the back door cracked.
Daddy always said that I wish I was black
Man, when love is in the house, the house is packed
Woke up this morning, didn’t know what to do
There was people all around me tellin’ me to sing the blues
Said they aint’ seen no happy since 1992
Then they turned to me thinking I’d agree and I offered
This humble view
And I say, Naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw,
Love is in the house and the house is packed
Naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw
Love is in the house and the hose is packed
So much so I left the back door cracked
Mama always said it’s a matter of fact
That when love is in the house, the house is packed.
Love is in the house and the house is packed
So much so, I left the back door cracked.
Daddy always said that I wish I was black
And when love is in the house, the house is packed
Tears welled in her eyes, but they would not fall. “You were really lucky to have Nick,” her father said from behind her. All she could do was nod- she was too overcome by watching Nick grieve to speak. A few tears rolled down Nick’s cheek after he finished playing Julia’s favorite song. His head hung low as he walked over to her body. He knelt down beside her and took her cold hand in his. With his free hand, he adjusted her curls that had slipped from their original spot. To him, Julia still looked beautiful. She was not smiling and her eyes did not shine, but she was still the amazing girl he had fallen in love with five years prior. As he looked at Julia, memories of their time together flashed through his mind. He remembered buying the perfect engagement ring for her and his excitement to see it on her hand. His head dropped against the wood that held Julia from the sadness that coursed through his body. Nick lifted up his head at the realization of what he had hidden in his suit jacket. He briefly let go of Julia’s hand to fish a small box out of the inside of his jacket. He carefully opened the jewelry box to expose the sparking ring. Nick carefully picked up Julia’s left hand and slipped the ring onto her ring finger. “I’ll never forget you, my Dear. Will you marry me?” Nick whispered to Julia as tears streamed down his face. He placed her hands back together and wiped the tears from his face before he joined his family again. Julia’s mother, Stephani, pulled Nick into a tight hug and they said a prayer to God to keep Julia Rose safe. Julia’s old best friends, Charloett and Nora, joined Nick and Stephani as he started to hum “Amazing Grace.”
Julia Rose looked at the ring that Nick had slipped onto her finger. The five diamonds sparkled majestically. “Yes, Nick, I will always be yours,” Julia choked on her words as her tears finally began to fall.
“Come on, sweetheart,” Julia’s father called as he pulled her away from watching Nick, “it’s time to go.”
