Always For You
Niki sat alone in the newly finished kitchen during the late hours of the evening, waiting. She wondered if he would even come home this time. He had been late every night, and it killed her to know what he was always doing. She wanted so badly to believe his varying excuses, that band practice ran late, or the interview took much longer than planned, but she had a feeling he was hiding something, something different.
It was 10:15 when she heard his car pull into the driveway, causing her ears to perk up and her spine to straighten. Niki knew he would be in the worst of moods, as he always was late at night, but she hoped maybe he would be able to smile for her once. After all, their two-year anniversary was the next day, and she had thought that would make him happier. She took a deep breath in as the doorknob turned, opening up to her beloved husband whom she adored more than life itself.
“Hi, Joe,” she said softly, standing to greet him. She took his coat and draped it over the back of the chair she had previously been sitting in. “How was work?”
Joe shrugged, opening the refrigerator door and grabbing a bottle of water, shutting the door behind him. He slid into one of the bar stools at the island in the middle of the kitchen, downing half of the bottle in one gulp.
“Well that’s good,” Niki replied awkwardly, confused and frustrated at his off behavior. Where was the man she fell in love with, the one full of laughter, always excited to see her? Their marriage had been great from from day one, their wedding day. It had been the greatest time of their lives, being able to be joined together with all of their friends and family their by their sides.
Niki had loved Joe from the day she set eyes on him, only four years earlier. They had met at a local supermarket in her hometown, bumping into each other while picking out red apples in the produce section. She couldn’t believe her luck at first, running into the famous rockstar, but when she looked into his eyes, she felt an immediate attraction. Joe must have felt it too, because he asked her to dinner that evening.
Although he had to continue on the U.S. tour he was on with his brothers, Joe never lost sight of Niki, always calling and texting her, telling her how much he missed her and how he couldn’t wait to see her next. As tough as it was, Niki kept hope in Joe, ignoring rumors that he was dating the latest Hollywood diva. The two had been through enough together, why couldn’t their marriage just be normal?
“So I was thinking...” she started, breaking the awkward silence that had filled the spacious house. “Maybe we could go to that new Chinese restaurant down the road for dinner tomorrow night. I’ve heard the food’s great, and you love Chinese, so--”
“Yeah, maybe,” Joe interrupted. “I’m going to head up to bed now, if you don’t mind.” He rose from his chair and headed towards the stairs, leaving Niki alone yet again. She crinkled her forehead as she padded up the carpeted steps, still confused at Joe’s strange behavior.
Joe had already peeled off his shirt when Niki finally reached their bedroom. She quietly untied her purple terry cloth robe and climbed into the king-sized bed, her chestnut brown hair falling to her shoulders. Biting her lip, she watched as Joe flopped down next to her and flipping on the TV, letting out a big sigh.
“Is... is everything okay?” Niki asked softly, turning her head towards the man she would give her life for, while he was doing nothing but treating her like dirt.
Joe stared straight ahead at the plasma screen hanging on the wall, nodding his head. “Yes, everything is fine.”
Niki wanted to cry. But instead, she let him have his crabby moment and rolled over onto her side, falling into a troubled sleep.

The next morning, Niki woke to an empty spot next to her, shaking her head. He couldn’t even wait until she woke up before he left. It was the same every day, and she still hadn’t gotten used to it. She sighed and padded down the stairs to waste away another day, wishing the man she had married two years to that day would get his body back.
Niki was folding laundry when the phone rang late that afternoon. She had spent the day cleaning and busying herself with chores and such, to keep her mind off of the fact that Joe had practically forgotten their anniversary.
“Hello?” she spoke, a slight annoyance in her tone.
“Happy anniversary, honey,” Joe’s soothing voice spoke over the other line. “How has your day been so far?”
Niki was confused. The day before, he’s a jerk and doesn’t even talk to her, and now he’s all “how was your day”? “It was fine...” she answered. “What’s going on, Joe?”
She heard him laugh. “Nothing, babe. But I’m taking you somewhere tonight, so can you be ready by 6:30, dressed in something nice?”
A smile, for the first time in ages, slid onto Niki’s face. “Of course I can,” she replied softly, wishing he was right there in front of her so she could rip off his clothes.
“Good,” he said cheerfully. “I’ll see you then. I love you.”
During the next two hours, Niki took her time making sure she looked perfect, in a little black dress she had bought just a week before, curling her hair into ringlets that sat atop her shoulders. As she applied a thin coat of make-up, she wondered what made Joe’s mood change all of the sudden.
Promptly at 6:30, the doorbell to their two-story house rang, and Niki ran, as fast as she could in heels, down the stairs. She flung the door open, and there he was, the man she had loved all of these years, not the one she had fallen asleep next to the night before.
“Niki,” he breathed, his eyes scanning the entirety of her, as hers did the same to him. He had on one of his many suits, a rose pink oxford underneath, and a genuine grin on his face. Niki blushed, just like she had when Joe had proposed to her under the stars that one summer evening.
“You look... amazing.” Joe chose his words wisely, afraid that there weren’t enough words to describe what she looked like in that exact moment. He took a step forward, into the house, clasping his arms around her familiar body. Niki breathed in the fresh scent of his Kiehl’s aftershave, instantly feeling safe. He pulled away and reached for her hand, leading her down the front steps, her hand in his.
“So I have to ask,” Niki started as they drove down the long, winding road ahead of them, her in the passenger seat of Joe’s vintage Mustang convertible. “What was with the crappy mood yesterday, and every day before that?” she asked, a smirk on her face.
Joe sighed, looking from the road to her face. “I’ve been planning this night for weeks now.” He spoke each word gently, as if not to say anything wrong. “I knew that if I acted to happy, or excited, I would crack and tell you all about it. And I am so sorry about it, because I know how much you must have wanted to shoot me.”
Tears brimmed in Niki’s eyes as she leaned over and rested her head on Joe’s broad shoulder, taking in a deep breath. “I love you,” she whispered into the summer night, a practically permanent grin on her face.
Joe smiled and placed his arm around her, repeating the same three words to her as they drove off into the sunset.

Aww, Joe was so sweet to Niki. making it seem like he didn't care, but then surprising her at the end. I loved this Carly, you should write more one-shots...and more chapters to you story....lol.
