Chapter Six, Part III:
Good Enough
Darren Hayes
If everything I give
Doesn’t seem like a lot
If it’s all that I got
Baby tell that could be good enough
“What do you think the boys have planned for us tonight?” Jess asked walking into Aimee and Kevin’s hotel room with a concert outfit and make up bag in hand. When she had gotten back from the beach with Nick he had instructed her to go to Aimee’s room to get ready. Needless to say Jess and Sam were extremely confused as to why they had to get ready in Aimee’s room instead of their own. Still they didn’t argue and just did as they were told. No need to argue over something so stupid.
Aimee shrugged her shoulder at Jess’s question, “Who knows.”
“I just have to say that this is kind of weird. I mean normally we usually just hang backstage in our sweats. The boys never make us get dressed up. So something is definitely up.” Sam suggested, and then noticed Aimee packing up her camera and film. “Ok now I positively know something is up. Why are you bringing your camera?”
“Because I have to take new shots for the website...” Aimee answered lying through her teeth, but Sam didn’t quite believe her. “…and oh my goodness Jess what’s on your back?” Aimee asked noticing the now visible mark on Jess’s lower back.
“What’s wrong with it?” She asked trying to look behind her.
Sam stifled a laugh, “You have a hand mark on your back.”
“Oh no! Nick and I fell asleep on the beach before and I guess he left his hand on my back. I’m going to kill him.” As Jess stood there embarrassed the front door to Aimee’s hotel opened and Kevin walked in.
Aimee rolled her eyes, “Kevin! I told you we were getting changed in here! I don’t barge into your dressing room when you, Joe and Nick are changing do I?”
Kevin smiled kissing her gently, “It’s not like I’m interested in looking at anyone other than you. But Jess what the heck is that on your back?” He asked looking over Aimee’s shoulder. Jess blushed as Aimee pushed him out the door, but still she could hear the argument that they were having nearby. “That was a handprint Aimee and if I’m correct it seemed to be the same size of my brother’s hand.”
“He’s her boyfriend. He put his hand on her back and they fell asleep on the beach. It was harmless.”
“Yes to us its harmless, but to the media it’s only more proof of a physical relationship.”
Aimee laughed, “Bub you are paranoid. There is no physical relationship between them.”
“But the media can misinterpret things. Especially when there is evidence to misinterpret.”
“Kevin, everything is going to be fine. No one is ever going to see the handprint. You wouldn’t have even seen it if you hadn’t barged in the room while we were all getting changed. So stop worrying about it Jess is embarrassed enough. She doesn’t need to worry about you being mad at her too. Take a deep breath. Tonight is going to be amazing, and who knows maybe you’ll even get…”
Aimee was cut off when she heard Sam shout, “My virgin ears, Aimee!”
“You don’t even know what I was going to say.” Aimee shouted back then turned back to Kevin.
Kevin chuckled kissing Aimee softly, “So I guess I will see you girls later.”

Needless to say the boys had made a mistake by insisting the girls get ready together, because they were already 10 minutes late. Joe was pacing the dressing room. Things had been awkward between him and Sam for awhile tonight, and while he knew he had been the reason for it he hoped tonight would make up for that. A few moments later the girls walked into the room dressed to impress. Nick and Joe stared wide eye at their girlfriends admiring their flawless appearance, as Kevin kept his cool and slinked his arms around his wife’s waist.
“You look beautiful.” Kevin said proudly kissing her cheek.
Nick followed Kevin’s lead and did the same to Jess. But when Joe turned to Sam the words seemed to get caught in his throat and he struggled to get them out. “Sam you ummm … you look.” He coughed as Sam waiting impatiently. “Beautiful.” He finally spit out but didn’t look her in the eyes.
Aimee spotted the tears forming in Sam’s eyes and automatically felt sorry. If only Sam really knew why Joe was acting this way she would be crying for a different reason. “We better go get our seats.” Aimee said anxiously. “And you boys have to go get ready.” Nodding the girls headed to their seats.
The boys kicked off the show with a bang, and if Aimee was correct it seemed that they had a little more energy a little more excitement for this concert. She smiled widely at Kevin who winked at her from his microphone. But when she looked over at Joe she realized how good he was at what he did, but even his eyes couldn’t hide the worry and nervousness he felt tonight.
Towards the middle of the concert the boys had run off stage for a quick costume change and when they returned there was a stool at center stage. Kevin and Nick began plucking a few chords to Hello Beautiful, and for awhile it seemed as if they were never going to start the song. They were supposed to have called Sam up on stage by now, but no one seemed to take the initiative. Nick looked at Kevin who shrugged when Joe removed the stool and placed it on the side of the stage. It seemed as if his plan was not going to happen. At least not at this moment.
When the concert was over the three girls made their way back to their own buses. Sam wasn’t surprised to find Joe talking to himself when she walked on to hers; it seemed he had been doing that a lot lately. She took a step closer to him and unexpectedly startled him.
“Joe, what’s wrong?” She dared to ask, her voice both unsure and concerned. “You’ve been acting weird lately and I’m worried about you. About us.” Joe blinked as he listened but didn’t say anything back so she continued. “If you are having doubts about me coming out on the road with you, then I’ll go home.”
Joe sighed, “Sam that’s not it. It’s just…” He paused looking into her eyes. “I had tonight all planned out in my head for weeks. That’s why I’ve been acting weird. I was nervous about tonight and when I saw all those people out there I choked. I didn’t want you to say no to me in front of them.”
“Say no to what?” She asked confused.
Slowly, Joe got on one knee in front of her pulling a black velvet box from his pocket. “Sam I’ve known since the day that I met you in the hospital that you were the girl for me. No one ever saw me as more than just the “cute, funny jonas” but you did. And I love everything about you. Tonight I wanted to bring you up on stage to announce to the whole world that I loved you, but I was afraid you might say no or that the fans wouldn’t have been so kind. But there is no doubt in my mind that this is something I want to do. Sam will you marry me?”
Sam stood there in shock as she slowly nodded, “Yes.”
