Chapter 1
Nostalgia
“You look simply lovely darling.” Meg said, fluffing the dress as Sarah smeared bright red lipstick on, puckering for the mirror.
“Thank you ever so much deary,” Sarah replied, standing. “Now we musn’t keep everyone waiting.” The two girls shuffled outside in their pink dresses, scraping their shoes along the cement.
Meg cleared her throat, “Introducing the bride!” 5-year-old Nick hurriedly stood up and started down the aisle, smiling proudly as he threw crumpled flowers all over the grass. Two pairs of parents stood up from their lawn chairs and turned to watch the 8-year-old girl walk towards her groom. Joe turned to his best man/brother, Kevin.
“Did you find it?” he asked. Kevin rolled his eyes and nodded, still angry that his mom made him be in the baby wedding in the first place. Sarah reached Joe and handed him her flowers. He put one behind her ear. Nick scrambled on top of a box in front of them, holding a jumbo-sized coloring book upside down.
“Dearly loved, we are here because Joe likes Sarah, and to night them in holy mattress money. Sarah, do you like Joe?”
“Yeah,” Sarah giggled.
“Good. Now Joe, what do have to give her to show your ‘fections?” Kevin put something in Joe’s hand. Joe smiled at Sarah and placed a small object in her hand. She looked to see a little rock with a big hole through the middle, something she and Joe had found together, weeks before. He had told her it was the coolest thing ever. Sarah smiled.
Nick slammed the book shut. “I now announce you, man and wife!” Joe kissed Sarah sweetly on the nose.
Both their parents clapped as Joe and Sarah come running to them. “Looks like you’re the new Mrs. Jonas.” Joe’s mother, Denise, said to Sarah. Joe looked a bit confused.
“No, she’s Sarah.” He told her.
~
“Beep beep beep.” The alarm clock rang.
“No, not yet.” Sarah groaned, hitting the snooze button. ‘That was strange,” she thought. A nostalgic moment of her childhood was not something that occurred often in her dreams. Maybe it was because she hadn’t seen her three best friends, Kevin, Nick, and most of all Joe, in months. Maybe it was because they were all coming home from the latest tour today.
“They’re coming home today!” she shouted, jumping out of bed. How could she have suddenly forgotten the day she’d been waiting for since she had waved goodbye at the airport months ago. Skipping to her closet she pulled out outfit after outfit, finally finding the perfect one. The same clothes she had said goodbye in were going to say hello. A red t-shirt three sizes too big and blue jeans ripped across the knee. She lay them down and slipped on her tennis shoes.
Sarah couldn't help but feel calm as she listened to the steady rythm of her feet hitting the sidewalk, knowing this was her last day for a long time to run alone. When she reached their street she was already seeing the fans sitting on the sidewalk, anxious looks on their faces. She rolled her eyes and ran right past them up to the house. Some stared, thinking, "Who is the sweaty girl who walked into their house?"
Sarah locked the door and walked into the kitchen, filling a pan with water. She went all through the house and watered the plants, stopping to smile at the old picture of her and Joe covered in mud, smiling goofily. She had been asked to look after the house while the family was away on the tour. She’d happily accepted, even though every time she was there she missed them all so much more. From little Frankie to Mrs. Denise and Mr. Kevin. They were her second family, and having them gone for so long was torturing. She sighed, today was the day. They’d finally be back. She finished straightening up and then left, locking the door. A couple of girls came up to her as she was walking down the front yard.
“Who are you?” One asked, dumbfounded.
“I’m Sarah,” she replied, sticking out her hand, “And you are?”
“Uh, Holly, ”the girl said, shaking it. “But…how….this is the Jonas Brother’s house right?
“Yes, it is.”
“But why are you here?” The girl seemed to be seething with jealousy.
“I was watering the plants…and why are you here?” Sarah spat back.
The girl just stood there. “I…uh…I, um,” then she walked away. Sarah laughed at how ridiculous the whole thing was and started running again, breathing in the fresh morning air. When she got home her mother was cooking in the kitchen.
“Morning mom.” Sarah said, biting into a piece of toast.
“Good morning honey, have a nice run?” Sarah nodded.
“I’m gonna go take a shower.” She hopped out of her chair, grabbed the orange juice carton and ran to her room. For a relatively calm person, Sarah was very anxious and jumpy. She still couldn’t believer that in just a few hours she would get her hug. Joe always gave her a special, long, squeeze-her-so-tight-she-couldn’t-breathe hug every morning before their run, and as suprising as it sounds she missed that more than anything else. A person shouldn’t be hug deprived for this long. In the shower the hot water calmed her nerves, giving her time to think of all that they would do once the boys got home. Then it hit her.
“That’s it!” she shouted, rushing to put her clothes on. She pulled a brush through her tangled mess of hair, thought better of it and threw it into a ponytail, put some mascara on, grabbed her phone and keys and ran out the door. “Be back later mom!” she called.
~
Joe clutched the seat, nervous and extremely excited. They would be landing in ten minutes and all he could do was sit in anticipation. Nick and Kevin had offered to let him play cards with them, be just couldn’t concentrate and ended up sitting by himself. Of course they were all excited to be coming home and see all of their old friends, but Joe had one particular friend on his mind that had been there since they had started this tour. He wondered if she looked different, if she was different. It would be fine if she was, but mostly he was hoping he would come home to the same girl he left. Sarah. He closed his eyes, picturing her the time he last saw her. A messy ponytail, one of his old baggy t-shirts and some ripped jeans. He smiled, so impatient for the moment he could hug her. Those hugs had become a need and he hadn’t had one in way too long.
“Hey guys,” their dad popped in, “We’ll be landing in a few minutes, so buckle up.” Joe couldn’t keep the wide grin from spreading across his face as the plane touched the ground.

Chapter 2:
Oranges
After running to the grocery store, Sarah snuck the back way into the Jonas' house, making sure the fans from before didn't see her. Once inside she unpacked the food and started to cook. They would all be arriving in two hours and she wanted them to come home to a nice meal and a clean house. Once everything was cooking, she went all through the house, cleaning some extra stuff, straightening a few little things. she stopped at Joe's room. Walking in, a flood of emotions washed over her. As long as the family had been gone, Sarah hadn't come into his room, she didn't want to be there without him. It just didn't seem right to her. Stepping farther in she took it all in, all of the memories coming back to her. She lay on his bed, breathing in the scent that still lingered there. His scent. Deodorant, cologne and a little sweat. And oranges. For as long as she could remember he had always smelled faintly of oranges.
"Soon enough." she sighed, standing up and closing the door. Tonight they would sit on his bed and talk for hours about everything that had happened over the past three months. She happily skipped to the kitchen, humming as she cooked. One more hour.
~
Joe was still as fidgety as ever as he drove home from the airport. He had thought for sure she would be there, be the first one to hug him. But all he saw were ten or so screaming fans who had found out where the plane was landing. Though he was disappointed, that diappointment was overshadowed by his idea of suprising her. When his whole family had piled into their car, he hung back and got into a cab, giving the driver Sarah's address. She was going to be so excited when she opened the door and see him standing there.
"Hey, aren't you one of those Jonas Brothers?" The cab driver asked.
"Yeah," Joe smiled.
"My daughter loves you guys," he said, "Would you mind if I got her an autograph?" Joe nodded, taking the paper the driver held up. "Her name is Joanie." Joe wrote out a typical message and handed it back. "And here we are." Taking a deep breath, Joe opened the door and stepped out. He paid the driver and just sat and stared at the house. She was right there, only a few steps away, yet he suddenly lost all ability to move. Before long his wanting got the better of him, and he walked to the door, shaking of his nerves. He knocked, and knocked, and knocked. Right as he turned to walk away he heard the door open. He spun around, but his face fell as Sarah's mother, Leah, looked back at him.
"Joseph!" she cried, embracing him. "I was just wondering when you were going to come pay me a visit. Where's the rest of you family?"
"They're at home." he replied, "Actually, I was looking for Sarah." Leah looked confused.
"She hasn't been home for hours, I assumed she was meeting you at the airport." Joe nodded, trying not to show how disappointed he felt. Didn't she remember he was coming home today?
"Well, do you mind if I use the back door to get home?" he asked. Leah nodded, motioning for him to come in. When they were kids, Sarah and Joe made a pathway to each others houses in the back. He took that path now, hoping to avoid the many fans he knew were surrounding his house. Now he just needed quiet to think. Did she really forget?
~
Sarah had just finished putting the food on the table when she heard the fans start screaming. Peeking out the window she saw the cars pull up. She quickly ran to the mirror and fixed what she could of her hair. The door opened, she smiled and turned around, her stomach doing nervous flip-flops. Nick was the first to walk in. When he saw her standing there he put his stuff down and ran to give her a hug. Kevin, Frankie and Mrs. Denise all walked in next, looking suprised and happy to see her. After many hugs were exchanged she looked at the door, waiting for him ot come in next. Butterflies danced in her stomach and a drop of sweat slid down her forhead as the door opened once again. It was Mr. Kevin. Not that she wasn'y happy to see him too, she gave him a hug. Confusion flooded her thoughts as no one else walked through the door. Where was he? What happened to him?
"Did you cook dinner?" Mrs. Denise cried form the kitchen, snapping Sarah from her thoughts.
"I thought you would like a break when you got home." she called. She walked up to Kevin, who was hauling suitcases. "Where's Joe?"
"I'm not entirely sure." Kevin said, "He said he'd meet us here, but he had to do something first. Then he got in a cab." Sarah looked at the floor. Kevin put a hand on her shoulder, "I'm sure he's just as excited to see you. The whole plane ride he seemed very distant, sitting still. And you know he was anxious if he sat still for five hours." She smiled and hugged him aagin, Kevin could always cheer her up.
"You're right." she said. But still there was a small part of her that wouldn't be satisfied until she got to see him, until she got her Joe hug.
Ten minutes later everyone was seated at the table. As Kevin prayed for the meal, all Sarah could think about was the empty seat beside her. As soon as they started eating the back door opened, giving Sarah goosebumps all over her arms. She turned to face the door and took in a staggered breath. There he was. His hair was a little longer and her looked an inch or two taller, but he was still there. She couldn't help but stare, and he just stared right back. Both were a bit shell-shocked, neither expecting the other. Joe's hand was still on the doorknob, then it dropped to his side. Nick, who was closest to him, nudged his brother. Joe snapped back into focus, giving a nervous chuckle. All Sarah had to see was that smile to know she couldn't take it anymore. They walked quickly to each other, embracing with no intention of letting go. She buried her head in his shoulder, cherishing the hug she'd been waiting for. But this hug was different, not quite as crushing, more gentle, but he still held on just as tight. They rocked back and forth, saying all of the emotions they had felt from their time apart. She liked this hug better. Breathing in deeply, Sarah smiled. Oranges.

Chapter 3:
Beginnings
"Your turn," Joe said, nudging Sarah's side playfully. After wolfing down their dinner the two had run up to Joe's room, ready to pay full attention to the other. They were laying side by side on his bed, staring at his glow in the dark star stickers they had put up together years ago and playing the "Get to Know Me" game. Though in this case it was the "Get to Know The New Me" game. Sarah sighed, thinking of her next question.
"What was the saddest moment of this tour for you?" she asled, stealing a glance at his flawless face, watching for his reaction. His eyebrows scrunched together as he thought hard about it.
"You want the truth?" he asked, propping his head up on his arm to look at her. She looked into his big, brown eyes, nodding. He took a deep breath, "When we had just boarded the plane at the beginning, I looked out my window to the airport. And I saw you, staring at our plane, with your hand on the glass window, like you were reaching out to me. The saddest moment was realizing it would be three months before I could reach out and hold your hand again." He gave her a small smile and gently took her hand in his. Sarah felt here heart start to beat rapidly as a blush crept up her cheeks. She looked up from the blanket, her stomach flopping as soon as their eyes met. His warm hand let go of hers and his calloused thumb softly stroked her cheek. They just sat and stared, neither's eyes leaving the other's.
"Joseph!" his mom called loudly from downstairs. They both pulled apart quickly, causing Joe to fall to the floor. Sarah let out a small chuckle as he smile at her before walking out the door. She lay back on the pillows, taking in what had just happened. The things he'd said, the things he'd done, and most of all, the things she had felt. What had just happened? Joe walked in, interrupting her thoughts. He plopped down on the bed next to her.
"So my mom says as much as I missed you, midnight is too late to have friends over." he smiled widely at her, her favorite toothy grin of his. Sarah looked at the clock, shocked to see it read 12:05. "So now let me escort you home."
"Joe, it's only two blocks, I think I can get there on my own." She replied, declining the arm he'd offered her.
"Well, it's two blocks you won't be alone." he smiled, offering his arm again. She laughed and linked her arm through his, giving into that smile that, as much as she didn't want to admit it, melted her to the floor. Once they were down the stairs, Joe yelled out, "Mom! I'm walking Sarah home!" and closed the door.
Hope you liked it! I know it's short, but the next chapter is very long! I promise!
