Fitting in was the furthest thing from my mind. I was never one to follow the trends or be in the spotlight. My best friend Nick and I were always ones to go against the crowd. We were the ones who laughed at people who tried way too hard. But this time I'm on the other side. I was in the bookstore when Matt ran into me. He's the kind of guy who you want to talk to you.
"Hey, do I know you?" His voice was deep, yet soft at the same time.
"Uh.. yeah, I've only gone to the same school with you since kindergarden."
"Oh. Wow, I'm sorry. See you around.. uh, what's your name?"
From that moment on I wanted to just be normal. Instead of the geeky girl always hiding behind books and studies. Even if it kills me I will be normal. Even if Nick isn't on my side.
And here's chapter one! :D
What is normal? Normal is defined as fitting in with the crowd. I’m always told that people change. If that’s true then the definition of normal is always changing. Everyone must have a different perspective of what normal is. It could be hanging out with a bunch of friends, laughing and gossiping. It could be being yourself. Normal could be a million different definitions, and it is. But it’s constantly changing.
My freshmen year of high school. Fourteen and totally awkward. I read so many fashion magazines, trying to get the correct style. I was determined to fit in, yet stand out to a certain someone. Have you ever seen a guy that makes every head in the room turn? That was Matt Mistral. He had the rocker look like he was too cool for you, with a pretty girlfriend to go along with it.
Matt’s girlfriend is gorgeous. Her name is Sofie. She’s 15 and he’s 17. She’s a dancer and he’s captain of the football team. They go hand in hand. And that’s how they were all the time. Hand in hand. Every girl watched with envy when they passed. I secretly did.
“Mom, can we go to the mall?” I asked. I wanted to go get a new wardrobe. Or at least some normal clothes for school.
“How many times do I have to tell you that we don’t have that kind of money?” I sighed. It’s not that we’re poor, mom’s just tight. But what she didn’t know was that I had a secret stash of birthday money. I ran to my room and emptied my piggy bank. I counted $676.62.
I caught the bus to the mall and hit every store I could and managed to get some very cute outfits with the help of seventeen magazine. I also saved a lot since I didn’t go to the way expensive stores.
A week before school started I got my hair cut. The woman cutting my hair asked if I ever straightened it. Truth was I never have and never really did much to my hair. No one told me I could do anything. She straightened it and when I looked in the mirror I was shocked. No longer was my hair curly and out of control. Why didn’t anyone tell me I could look this could? I bought a straightener with my left-over money.
My best friend Nick called me the day before school started. “Am I picking you up in the morning?” He asked.
“Just like every year, Nick.” I said teasing him.
“Are you nervous?”
“For what?” I asked.
“Going to a new school?”
“Kinda, but I’m totally pumped too!”
“Oh yeah, you get to see pretty boy, huh?”
“Shut up. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Nick and I have been best friends since second grade when I shared my blocks with him and he shared his crayons with me. We’ve been inseparable ever since.
When Nick pulled up the my house that morning he immediately said, “What happened to you, Maddy?” Commenting on my new hair, outfit, and makeup.
“Nothing.. I just bought some new clothes.”
“Oh gosh.. Don’t tell me, this is for lover boy who won’t even look in your direction!”
“Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t.”
“What was wrong with your clothes before?” He asked me.
“Just get me to school, please?”
