Chapter Two
Joe Jonas and his brother, Nick, opened the door slowly. No one was in the hallway as far as they could tell.
“Sshhh!” Nick warned. The boys quietly walked out of the classroom, expecting a wave of fans to attack them. Instead, they saw only one girl. She had gold-blonde hair and amazing gold-flecked green eyes. The girl seemed about Joe’s age.
“Whoa.” Joe choked out.
“Dude!” Nick whisper-yelled. “Keep walking!”
The pretty girl stepped in front of them. “Hey,” she greeted them, giving them a cute half-smile.
“Hi,” Joe said, surprised that not one girl had attacked them yet. This girl didn’t really seem to care who they were.
“So… you’re the boys who every girl in this school are freaking out about, then. Hm. You don’t seem like much.” The girl said.
Joe’s mouth practically dropped open. “What did you say?” Nick kicked him subtly in the leg.
“I said that you don’t seem like the cookie-cutter popstar type.” She answered.
“Well… we’re not.” Nick said with a shrug.
“Really. Well, I’ve never heard of you. Of course, I do know that there’s three of you. Screaming girls can be informal.” She laughed slightly.
“Yeah. Our brother, Kevin, is kind of out chauffeur. We’ve got to go meet him in the parking lot. So we’ll see you tomorrow.” Nick said.
“Alright. Mind if I walk out with you?” she asked with a sweet smile.
“No.” Joe said quickly. He didn’t want this girl to leave him just yet.
Nick rolled his eyes. “Come on. We won’t bite.” The girl giggled behind her hand.
Joe and Nick started walking out the door, followed by the girl.
“Oh, that reminds me.” Nick started. “What’s your name?”
“Alice. But everyone calls me Aly.” She answered from behind the boys.
“Ok.” Joe said, once again much too quickly.
Alice walked out the door without another word. The boys saw her hop into a gold Volvo. “Whoa…” they both whispered. “A Volvo?”
~ ~ ~
That had been pathetic. Alice thought to herself on the drive home. Was Joe always like that around girls? I mean, Alice knew she was pretty and all but really! He should’ve been used to it by then.
She had really enjoyed Nick and Joe’s gasp when they saw her hop into her Volvo. That was pretty satisfying. She smirked again as she thought of Nick kicking Joe in the leg to keep him from babbling too much. Alice pulled into her driveway and unlocked the door.
“Mom! Dad! I’m home!” she called. It seemed… empty. “Hello?”
Only silence answered her.
Alice wasn’t the type of girl who got scared easily. But the eerily empty house freaked her out. She pulled out her phone, skimming through her list of numbers. Why in the world didn’t she have more friends? She picked a name at random. It was Kiely Summers, her other sort-of-a-friend. “Hey, Kiely.” She greeted when Kiely picked up after the first ring.
“Aly? Oh, hey, it’s been forever, hasn’t it?” Kiely said happily.
“Yeah, it really has.” She said, hearing her voice shake a little. “But anyway. My parents are gone, and I’ve got no idea where they are.”
“Really? Oh, wow. Well, they told my parents that they were going to stay home today. When my parents called them a little bit ago no one picked up.”
Alice was nervous, but she tried really hard to hide it. “Well, what do I do?” she asked in a bored voice.
“I don’t know! Call them or something!”
“Ok. I will. Thanks Keels!” I said as I hung up.
Alice sighed and slid down the side of the kitchen sink. Her back leaned on the cabinet. The wood felt cold on her cheek as she turned her face to look at the oven. “What’s going on?” she asked herself.
A knock on the front door made her jump. She quickly stood up and tried to see who was outside through the window in the door. “Hello?” she called, hoping the person outside could hear her. No one answered. She was forced to walk to the door and see who it was.
Alice tip-toed slowly over to the front door. She opened it, revealing Joe Jonas. “What in the world?” Alice exclaimed.
“Hey, Aly.” He greeted her, giving her a small wave.
“Why are you at my house and how do you know where I live?” she asked suspiciously.
“The answer to your first question is that I came here to tell you that your parents are at my house. They didn’t have your cell number, so they sent me over here. The answer to the second question is that I’m your new neighbor.”
Alice was about to complain about him coming over and then shouted, “What?!” How could she not have known that the Jonas Brothers were her new neighbors? “Ok, so, how did I not know this?”
“Well… When we left, it was about 6 in the morning so we wouldn’t run into traffic or screaming girls. And I suspect you were still asleep around that time. Right?”
Alice nodded absentmindedly. Neighbors? Well. That kind of sucked.
“Want to come to my house? Your parents wanted you to.”
“Alright, I’m coming. Just let me change.” Alice walked towards the stairs and then turned to see Joe still standing in the doorway. “Aren’t you going to come in?” she asked, hands on her hips.
“Uh… ok…” Joe said hesitantly. He slowly stepped inside, closing the door behind him. He didn’t seem impressed by the unexpectedly large house.
“Make yourself at home.” Alice told him as she went upstairs to change.
~ ~ ~
Wow. After seeing the school, Joe hadn’t expected anything like this house to be where Alice lived. But it was. There were three stories: a basement, a middle floor, and an upstairs. It was slightly messy, although after meeting her parents, he hadn’t expected much.
Alice was… definitely different. She seemed much more stuck up than the other girls at her school. Nick thought she was a brat, but Joe had to give her some credit. For a brat, she could nice.
Alice ran back downstairs. Joe almost stared. She was wearing a sparkly black skinny-strapped halter shirt with a deep v-neck and denim shorts. She wore silver Converse high-tops. “Hey. Sorry about that. I had to dress down a little, seeing as I’m not in school right now.”
Dress down? Joe thought to himself. How is wearing that dressing down?! “Al-alright.” Joe stammered a little as he opened the door for Alice.
“Thanks,” she giggled, covering her mouth.
She and Joe walked to the Jonas house together, not really talking. Once they got there, Joe opened the door.
“Hi, Joe!” Mrs. Jonas greeted them as they walked in.
“Hey, Mom.” Joe answered. He pointed to Alice and said, “This is Alice Morgan. She’s the Morgan’s daughter, and our next door neighbor.”
“Welcome to our house, Alice.” Mrs. Jonas said.
“Thanks,” Alice answered quietly. She seemed shy. “Hey Mom, hey Dad!” Alice said when she saw her parents. She immediately turned into the real Alice again. “You could’ve left a note or something, y’know?” she complained.
“Aly, we figured you wouldn’t mind. Plus, we sent Joe over to get you!” Her mom answered with a wink. Alice rolled her eyes.
“Whatever, Mom.” Then she notice the other two Jonas Brothers, Nick and Kevin, sitting by the window on a huge couch. “Hi,” she said, giving a little wave.
The two nodded. Nick said, “Hey, Alice.”
Alice almost completely ignored him, even after saying hi.
Joe really hoped Alice would eventually stop pretending not to care.
