The next morning I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I groaned at my reflection in the mirror and couldn't wait to beat Joe this morning at running. I took a quick shower and threw on some simple makeup. I thought, today was our first day of detention. I put on my running shoes and turned my iPod on.
I walked out of the house, to see Joseph nowhere in sight. I smiled, but then heard the garage of the house next door open. I sighed and the same boy that had been my enemy forever walked out onto his driveway. I rolled my eyes at him and ran up the block. He followed close behind. "Jonas, don't expect to beat me today," I said sourly. He scoffed.
"After yesterday, not a chance you'll beat me," he said. I turned south and he went north. I did my usual route, and couldn't help but think about how our competitions were so stupid. But I needed to prove it to him. I could be just as good as he was and better.
Twenty minutes later I went back the way I came and saw a dark haired boy full of sweat heading my way. I grunted and turned my iPod to something more upbeat. He saw me and ran faster. We met at the corner and I pushed him off the sidewalk. "Jonas, you can't beat a girl."
"Perez, you're nothing but competition to me."
"Jonas, I'm glad you still think you have competition at your comprehension level."
"Don't make me remind you that we have the same GPA."
"And don't make me remind you that I got an A+ in English, while you got an A," I said back in his face. He scoffed and pushed me, getting ahead.
I ran full speed and beat him to his driveway. "Jonas, you don't have anything on me." I said walking into my house. I left him standing there to cool down while I got ready for the bus to come.

I showed the bus driver me school ID and I saw that Joe was already in the back seat. I rolled my eyes and sat in the other back seat across from him. "Perez, move," he said. I grunted.
"Says who?"
"ME."
"Don't care!" I said finishing my math homework.
-------------------------------------------------------
We walked into school. I met up with my friend Heather and Joe met up with his friend Austin. My locker was next to Joe's, sadly. I opened my locker and Heather watched from behind. Luckily, Joe wasn't there yet.
"I can't believe you're still competing with him. It's so pointless."
"Whatev. I hate him. I'd rather date a frog than him," I said into my locker.
"I'm sure I'm more handsome than a frog," a male voice said. I took my head out of my locker, scared, and hit my head on the top. Joe started laughing with Austin. I gave him a death stare.
"Jonas, a frog has better skin, lips, and eyes than you will ever have," I said. He rolled his eyes.
"I guess we'll just see about that in biology today when we dissect frogs."
"Jonas, I am NOT working with you. I work against you."
"Perez, chill," he said into my face. I scoffed and turned on my heel following Heather to P.E.
