CHAPTER UNO
Melanie’s long wavy brown hair was pulled back into a high pony, her black framed glasses resting lightly on her head. She sat in her favorite booth waiting for her best friend Nikki to meet her after her run. 5 minutes later Nikki walked in, her black curly hair set in a messy bun. She got her coffee and made her way over to Mel. The two best friends had known each other since third grade, and they hung out regularly, although they didn’t attend the same school.
“Omj, Guess who I talked to last night!” Mel exclaimed, drinking her coffee.
“Was it-“Nikki asked.
Melanie nodded.
“No! Gosh, are you serious?!”
Mel nodded again.
Nikki punched her playfully in the arm. “Well, what did he say?!”
“Oh, nothing.” Melanie grinned.
“You lie! Tell me, tell me! Come on, spill!” Nikki said, punching her again.
“Nope! I don’t think I should…” Mel replied. She took another sip of her coffee and assumed an innocent expression.
“Fine, don’t tell me,” Nikki said, folding her arms.
The two girls sat there in silence, Nikki bouncing quietly in her chair. Soon the suspense became too much for her, and she burst out, “Come ON! Please tell me before I lose my mind!”
Melanie laughed, saying, “Oh, alright.” She stopped to add to her best friend’s excitement. “They’ll be here in a week!” she finally exclaimed.
Nikki squealed, jumping up and down. The man at the counter stared at her, wondering why she became so spastic. “Yay yay yay yay yay yay,” she yelled, jumping around.
Melanie laughed even harder when she tripped and fell into the table, still yelling.
“Oh gosh, this means we have to call the rest of Lucky Seven to get ready!!” Nikki screamed, snatching her sidekick from her purse.
Mel got up, chuckling. Grabbing her purse, she headed to her car. Nikki was still immersed in her IM conversation when she pulled out of the parking lot. Nikki got way too excited when it came to these things, but Mel loved seeing it anyway.
“Oh My Jonas, Pick up your phone! Your luverrr wants to scream at you. Oh my Jo-“ Mel opened her sidekick and put it on speaker.
“-Nas, Pick up your phone!” Mandy finished, laughing at her own clever ringtone.
“Hey babycakes!” Mel screamed.
“Summah is heee-uh!” Mandy yelled back.
“I know it,” Mel replied, pulling into the parking lot of her favorite section of beach. She loved everything about California, especially the beaches. There was so much to do, and she loved to come here and relax.
“Nikki texted me about your special guests,” Mandy replied, clearly pleased.
“Oh, yeah. She kinda freaked out when I told her. I don’t even think she noticed I left,” Mel said, grabbing her bag out of the trunk.
“Wow that is so Nikki. So anyways, is- oh hold on, I have another call,” Mandy said.
Mel heard her click over to the other call. Waiting patiently, she laid out her towel and dug her toes into the sand. Looking out into the ocean, she remembered the last time she was here. Looking down at her promise ring, she sighed.
“That was Em. She wants to hang out. Where should we meet?” Mandy said.
Mel looked around. I like it here, she thought. “Mmmm, how bout Beach 7, right by the life guard station. Do you need me to pick you up?” Mel asked.
“Nope!” Mandy replied happily. “I got my car back this weekend.”
Mel laughed. “Call the rest of the gang and meet here at 6,” she instructed.
“Gotcha. See ya in a few!”
“Talk to you later.” Mel closed her sidekick and laid back in the sand. Looking up at the clear blue sky she thought, This summer is gonna be the best summer ever.
