Chapter One:
"So, you guys wanna call your girls and we'll grab some lunch?" Joe Jonas asked his brothers as they headed out of the radio station where they just had an interview.
"Sure, they'd probably like that since we don't get to spend much time together." Kevin said, pulling his cell phone out of his pocket and dialing his girlfriend's number. The two spoke quickly and Kevin hung up, "Yeah they'll meet us at the Village Inn down the street." he told his brothers.
"Alright, cool." Nick chimed in and the three boys piled into the black SUV that had been waiting for them and headed off to the restaurant, with Kevin in the driver's seat.
A few minutes later, they pulled into the parking lot. Kevin grinned when he saw his girlfriend Amy standing at the door waiting for them to arrive. He quickly exited the vehicle and ran to greet her, "Hey gorgeous." he said, giving her a quick kiss.
"Hey handsome." she smiled back, returning his affections.
"I think I'm gonna hurl." Nick's girlfriend Grace cut in, jokingly.
"Oh hush, you're doing the same thing." Amy joked, poking her tongue out at her young friend.
"True." Grace smiled, leaning into Nick's embrace.
Joe looked on, standing alone. With a heavy sigh, he entered the restaurant, wondering how long it would take the others to notice he was no longer standing with them. Which apparently wasn't too long because less than two minutes later, the two couples entered the restaurant.
"Why didn't you wait for us, Joe?" Kevin asked, still clutching his girlfriend's hand in his.
"You guys seemed busy and I didn't want to interrupt." Joe said simply, turning a heel and walking up to the hostess podium.
They were greeted by a young woman with a big, fake, toothy grin plastered on her face, "How many?" she asked.
"Five..." Joe said.
"Smoking or non?" she asked, grabbing five menus.
"Non..." Kevin said from behind Joe.
"Alright, right this way." the hostess said and led them to a round booth towards the back of the restaurant. She placed the menus on the table, "Someone will be right with you." she said and with that, she was gone.
They all sat down in the booth and waited for the waiter/waitress to arrive.
"So...Amy? How's school going for you?" Joe asked, trying to start conversation while they waited. He hated the silence.
"Its going pretty good. I get my degree soon." Amy said happily from her seat next to Kevin.
"What is it you're going for again?" Grace asked from her seat between Nick and Joe.
"I'm getting my Bachelors in Nursing. I start my externship in two weeks." Amy said, tearing a piece off of her paper napkin.
"Whats an externship?" Grace asked.
"Its where I actually work with Doctors in the hospital taking care of patients. I do that for two months before I graduate." Amy replied, now rolling the torn piece of paper into a small ball between her fingers before chucking it at Joe's head.
Joe snapped out of his stouper, "Hey! What was that for?" he asked.
"You seemed kinda spacey. Whats up?" she asked, a look of concern flashing in her icey blue eyes.
"Nothing..." he said as a waiter came walking up to the table.
"Hi, I'm Dan and I'll be your server. Can I start you all off with something to drink?" he asked.
They all told him what they wanted and he walked off to get their drinks.
A few minutes later he returned, sitting their drinks in front of them. "Are you all ready to order or do you need a few more minutes?" he asked.
With that question, the whole group turned some interesting shades of red. They hadn't even LOOKED at their menus. "Actually, we're gonna need a few more minutes." Joe asked, blushing crimson.
"Okay, thats fine." the waiter laughed and walked away.
The group quickly opened their menus and read through them, trying to decide what they should order.
By the time the waiter returned, they had settled on their choices.
Everything else seemed to be a blurr to Joe. Sure, he joined in the conversation, cracked a few jokes and laughed at a few but he wasn't very interested in anything that had happened. Before he knew it, Kevin was paying the check and they were getting ready to leave.
Joe sat in the front passenger seat watching his brothers say goodbye to their girlfriends. He sighed sadly watching the scene before him. Why couldn't he find someone to love? Someone that loved him without trying to gain something from the relationship. Someone like his brothers have found.
A few minutes later, his brothers climb into the car and they head home.
Once they walk in the door, his youngest brother Frankie runs up to him, "Joe! Come play a game with me!"
Joe chuckles at his little brother's enthusiasm, "Not right now, buddy. After dinner, I promise." he says.
"Okay, I'm gonna hold you to that!" Frankie grins and takes off to the other room.
"Are you okay, sweetie?" Denise Jonas asks from the kitchen table, causing her son to jump.
"Oh...I'm fine..." he says.
"Are you sure?" she asks, getting up from the table and resting a her palm against her son's forehead, "Are you sick?"
"No, mom...I feel fine. I'm gonna go for a little walk." he says, backing away from her.
"Okay but wear your raincoat, its starting to storm." Denise says hesitantly.
"Alright..." Joe says, already heading to the room he shares with Kevin.
"Where are you going?" Kevin asks, seeing Joe pull his raincoat out of the closet.
"I'm gonna go for a walk." Joe says, pulling the coat on.
"Do you want some company?" Kevin asks, setting his guitar down.
Joe thinks for a moment and then sighs, "Sure."
"Cool, I'll see if Nick wants to come too." and with that, he leaves the room.
Joe sighs and walks into the kitchen to wait for his brothers, "Nick and Kevin are coming with me." he tells his mother.
"Okay good. I don't like the idea of one of you boys wandering off alone." she says, taking a sip of her coffee.
"Moooooom...I'm 18 years old...an adult. I think I can handle myself." Joe sighs heavily. He loves his mother dearly but hates her over-protective streak.
"I know that, sweetheart, but you're not any normal 18 year old. Everyone knows who you are and I'm sorry but I just don't feel safe having you wander off alone." Denise says.
After what seems like forever to Joe, Nick and Kevin appear in the kitchen, ready to go.
They all say goodbye to their mother and head out the door.
After about half an hour of walking, they stop by an old office building for a break and Joe hears something coming for the alley, "Did you guys hear that?" he asks his brothers.
"Hear what?" Kevin asks.
"It sounded like someone whimpering. It was coming from the alley." Joe said, turning to peer into the darkened alleyway.
"Probably a cat or something." Nick says, taking a drink from the water bottle he brought with him.
"No, I know what cats sound like and that definitely wasn't any cat I've ever heard. I'm gonna go see..." Joe said before walking back into the alley.
"Gah! I swear, he's gonna get himself killed one of these days! Come on Nick..." Kevin heaved an exhasperated sigh before he and Nick followed Joe into the alley.
"Hello? Is anyone here? If there is, you can come out. We're not gonna hurt you, we just want to help..." Joe called into the darkness.
There heard a few more small whimpers and finally found the source. A young girl crouched against the buildging with her knees pulled to her chest in a protective manner, with her face burried in them.
"Miss? Are you okay?" Kevin asked, slowly walking towards her.
Joe crouched down in front of her and reached his hand out and gingerly touched her shoulder, "Don't be scared..." he whispered as gently as possible.
"Don't touch me! Please!" the girl screamed, scooting away from Joe with a look of pure terror on her face.
"Whoa whoa...its okay...we're not gonna hurt you, we just want to see whats wrong." Nick whispered, trying to coax the girl out of the corner she was presently backed into.
"Please just leave me alone..." the girl whimpered, curling up into a ball on the dirty pavement.
"Please...let us help you. I'm Joe and these are my brothers Kevin and Nick. Whats your name?" Joe asked, slowly inching towards her, trying not to frighten her even more.
"M-Mia..." came her reply.
"Thats a pretty name. Do you want to tell us what happened?" Joe asked. But, unfortunately he had already guessed her situation. Her clothes were dirty from the mud in the alley and her shirt was ripped halfway down the front. Her face was bruised and she had a large gash above her right eye. It didn't take a genius to figure out what had happened to her.
"Please...just leave me alone." Mia whispered...trying to stand.
"At least let us take you to a hospital." Kevin said, trying to help her stand.
The girl vigorously shook her head 'no' and pulled herself from Kevin's grasp, "NO! I'll be fine..."
"You're hurt...you should see a doctor." Nick said, not knowing what else to do. After all, he had never been in this type of situation before and didn't know how to respond.
"I don't need a doctor..." Mia said, starting to limp away.
"Mia!" Joe called out, walking behind her. He placed his hand on the middle of her back to get her attention, which caused her to cry out in pain, "What?! What'd I do?!" Joe said, slightly panicking.
"N-n-nothing...I've gotta go..." Mia stuttered, trying to walk away.
Joe stepped in front of her, preventing her from going any further, "Please, let us help you." he pled.
"Yeah...let us at least take you to get cleaned up and into some dry clothes." Kevin said, with pleading eyes that matched Joe's.
"I-I don't want to be a bother." Mia said quietly.
"Its not a bother. Now come on..." Joe said, taking off his raincoat and putting it around her shoulders.
They left the darkened alley and slowly made their way home.
