So this song has been on repeat on my iPod for who knows how long... I hope you like it.

[A one-shot song fic]
Broken hearts and last goodbyes
Restless nights, but lullabies
Help to make this pain go away
I realize I let you down

I'm building up the strength just to say
Anna held the phone to her ear, tapping her foot on the ground impatiently. It was the third time she’d tried calling him that day, and he hadn’t picked up once. She knew he was busy, of course, but he could at least make time to call her back. After the fourth ring, his familiar voice came onto the line.
“Hey, hon!” Kevin exclaimed, sounding happy to hear from her.
“Kev? You finally picked up!” Anna grinned, finally feeling that warm, tingling feeling she always got when she talked to Kevin. “How was your day?” She heard other voices in the background, mostly Joe’s or Nick’s.
“Sorry, what did you say?” Kevin asked, obviously distracted.
Anna shut her eyes tightly and repeated herself, a sinking feeling in her stomach.. “How was your day?”
Kevin laughed, but it wasn’t at what she was saying. “Oh... oh, my day was good! Look, Anna, I really have to go. I’ll call you soon. I promise.”
A lump formed in Anna’s throat as she looked down, disappointed yet again. “Oh. Okay.” There was a long, awkward silence. “I love you.”
“Yeah, love you, too,” Kevin replied in a hurry, hanging up before anything else could be said.
Tears rolled silently down Anna’s cheeks as she fell onto her bed, sobbing into a pillow.

Before you go I wanted to say
Now that she was only three feet away from him, he could see that something was wrong. He had flown in as soon as their last tour had ended, only to come to this. He would never had guessed that something had gone wrong between the two. But when he had shown up at her door, instead of embracing him with a smile, she had asked if they could talk, a serious look on her face.
“I can’t do this, Kevin,” she whispered, her voice cracking with every word. “It’s... it’s too hard.” He watched as her eyes watered, her bottom lip quivering.
“No, Anna... please,” he begged. “Please. I... I need you.”
She sighed, tugging her fingers through her blonde hair. “I can’t,” she said firmly. “You... you’re always gone, and i-it’s too hard. You’re al-always busy, or you don’t have time to talk when I need you. I needed you, K-Kevin, and you weren’t there.”
Kevin’s heart filled with regret, for all of those times he hung up too quickly, or didn’t reply to her texts. He didn’t realize it at the time, but their relationship had slowly been deteriorating away, and he had done nothing about it.
“I’m so, so sorry, Anna,” he apologized softly, taking a step towards her, but she backed away. “I... I never meant to hurt you. I-I love you.”
Anna slowly shook her head, distancing herself further from him. She had never wanted it to end this way, but she couldn’t think of a better way to do it. Kevin had done this to them. He had pushed her away. She had dealt with it for so long, and she knew she had to do something about it.
“No, Kev,” she replied, looking at her feet, then back up at his sad face. “It... it’s over.”
Kevin begged, pleaded, trying to change her mind, but nothing could do it now. He nodded slightly, stepping towards her for one last embrace, holding her tight, knowing it would be the last time.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered into her hair before pulling away. The two locked eyes one last time as Kevin walked towards the door, finally shutting it firmly behind him.

Kevin lay in his bed, tossing and turning in the sheets. He couldn’t get her out of his head. It had been two long months since the break-up, and he was still trying to recover from it. It killed him to know that he could never call when he needed her, or even send her a short text telling her how much he loved her. Then he came to a decision: he had to see her one last time, beg her for her forgiveness, even if she wouldn’t take him back.
It was the middle of the night, but she only lived a half an hour away, right outside LA. He threw on a sweatshirt and his pair of glasses, jumping into the black Jeep Commander parked in the driveway. The entire drive there, the voice inside his head kept telling him to turn around, go home, he shouldn’t be doing this. But he knew he had to listen to his heart that was telling him to do what he needed to, to finally end it, for good.
Taking a deep breath, Kevin parked the car and stepped out, nervously walking up to the front door. He knew it was 2 in the morning, but he didn’t care. He knocked on the door until it opened. There she was, right in front of him, once more.
“Kevin?” she asked in disbelief, stepping outside and shutting the door behind her. “What are you doing here?”
“I can’t do it. I can’t make it without you, Anna,” he explained, looking her straight in the eyes. “I need you.”
He watched as she slowly shook her head, folding her arms across her chest. “Kevin, it’s over. It’s been over. We both need to move on. It’s for the better,” she assured him, her voice trembling. “I promise.”
“Anna,” he whispered, tears flowing down his cheeks as he fell into her arms, quiet sobs escaping his throat. She stood stiff at first, until she felt the dampness of her t-shirt, closing her arms tightly around him.
“I’m sorry, Anna,” Kevin claimed, the sobs subsiding. “It... it’s all my fault. I never meant for things to end this way. I just... I need you. I need you, Anna. I still love you!”
Anna held him, letting him cry until he got it all out. He finally stood on his own, wiping his eyes with his sweatshirt sleeve.
“You can do it, Kevin. I know you can.”
Kevin looked down, taking a long, deep breath before walking back to his car to leave her behind forever.
“I’m sorry, Anna.”
