well, the backstory on this is that wayyyy back in june, when I took MY SAT's, I wasn't really focusing on the test - I was writing this in my head instead. lol
Then when I got home, I wrote it, and pretty much forgot about it
But now I'm semi-procrastinating on my five page paper, (of which I only have a page to write haha) so I decided to dust this off and share it with all of y'all, instead of having it languish on my hard drive. haha
um.....everything in this story pretty much DID happen when I took my SATs....except for the Joe parts, acourse! lol
so enough rambling from me....enjoy!
She awoke entirely to early for her liking, to the sound of her cell phone dinging, meaning she had a new text. She wearily reached over to her phone and flipped it open. “Good luck on SATs!” the text read. She rolled over and groaned. She had sort of forgotten she had SATs today. Ugh
After throwing on whatever clothes she could find and tossing her short hair into a ponytail, she grabbed a bagel out of the bread basket and, after leaving a note for her parents, snagged her keys off the hook and was out the door.
She parked near the front entrance of school and walked over to her group of friends, all who looked about as happy to be there as she was, which is to say, not at all. They all clutched iced coffees and grumbled about the earliness of the time. Ever the optimist, she just hopped up and down to the music in her head and smiled. They all shook her heads at her, making their usual comments about how hyper she was. She didn’t mind; after almost 3 years, she was used to it. She just laughed and kept on bopping.
A few minutes later, she was talking to her friend Caitlin about the math they thought they’d have to do, when she suddenly gasped and stared at something to her right. She tried to get Caitlin’s attention, but it took several minutes. Finally, Caitlin snapped out of it, and said, “Brittany, look at that kid! He’s so hot! Black shirt”
Brittany looked over to where Caitlin was pointing, but all she saw was the back of the guy. He had dark brown hair and a black tshirt, for sure, but that alone didn’t say anything. She looked for a few more seconds, willing for him to turn around so she could see his face, but he never did. Brittany shrugged and went back to her conversation. No loss there - Caitlin tended to have….questionable taste in guys; this one was probably no different.
All too soon, people starting streaming into the building, and Brittany and her friends got caught up in the flow. They checked what rooms they were going to be in; as per usual, Brittany was in a different room than all of her friends, due to her last name. She walked into the room she was supposed to and took a seat near the front, away from the few other kids that were already there. She hummed to herself and tapped her feet as all the other kids wandered in, not really paying attention to who they were.
They were allowed to start working on the test, and Brittany took off, pencil flying. Even though her mind was in a million different places at once, she thought she was doing pretty well. After a few sections, the teacher called break. Not wanting to get up, Brittany just stretched her legs and watched everyone else walk in and out of the room. Nobody really caught her interest, until right before break was over. A boy scurried in right before time was up. He had dark brown hair and a black tshirt - could he be the guy Caitlin was talking about? Brittany had to admit, she had really picked a winner this time. He was gorgeous.
The rest of the test was a blur of filling in bubbles, singing random songs in her head, foot tapping, and catching glimpses of that kid during breaks. She made a promise to herself that she would talk to the kid after the test.
Finally, there was only one section to go - they were almost done! Brittany picked up her pencil to start….and suddenly, she sneezed really loud. It was kind of embarrassing. But only one person said “Bless you.” She turned in the direction of the voice, and found herself eye to eye with him. She blushed and muttered a quick “thank you” and went back to the test, which she couldn’t concentrate on AT ALL. It was a good thing it was English - her best subject.
Once the booklets were collected and they were dismissed, Brittany booked it out the room as fast as she could; all thoughts of the guy were eliminated by her frazzled nerves. As she walked down the hallway, lost in her thoughts, she heard a voice call out, “Hey!”
She stopped and spun around to find him standing there. “What are you doing?” she asked. “What does it look like I’m doing?” he asked, giving her a “duh” face. “Um…..stalking me?” she asked. She was a little creeped out now. “Oh, so now asking a pretty girl to lunch is considered ‘stalking’?” he asked, complete with finger quotes. Now Brittany was at a loss for words, a feeling she rarely experienced. “Um…..” she stalled for time. But his face fell. “Ok…I see how it is. I’ll leave you alone.” And he turned and walked away.
Now Brittany didn’t consider herself any kind of brave when it came to guys. But she just couldn’t let him walk away. She just couldn’t. “Hey!” she called after him, running down the hallway, flip-flops thwacking on the tile. He turned around just as she caught up to him, panting slightly after almost tripping. He looked at her quizzically. “I…I would love to go to lunch with you…..” she trailed off as she realized that she didn’t actually know his name. “…Joe” he supplied. “Well, then, JOE” she said happily. “Nice to meet you. I’m Brittany!” She stuck out her hand, and laughing, he shook it.
“Well then, shall we be off?” Brittany asked, jokingly offering her arm to Joe. He took it, smiling, and they walked out into the bright sunshine. As they walked, Brittany couldn’t help but laugh at her good luck. Who knew that she’d meet a guy at the SAT’s, of all places?
um....I hope you guys liked it!
and now I go back to my paper...
