She managed to catch a breath and speak through her tears, “Kevin?” she squeezed out, her voice was airy and thin. “Yeah baby, I’m here, you’ll be ok” he lifted his hand and gently wiped a tear from her eye. ”You miss them, don’t you” Kevin said. She managed to nod her head. “C’mon, let me take you home”. Kevin stood up, pulling her off the cold, wet ground and forcing her to stand. Her knees gave way, and her body fell limp into his arms. Kevin’s quick and strong arms held and steadied her, not letting her fall. He scooped up her soaked, petite body and grasped it, holding her close to his chest. He pulled the hood of the oversized bowling sweatshirt he had given her on their first date over her head, and shielded her face from the rain. The walk seemed like an eternity, like a dark, endless hall with no light at the end. The rain pelted Kevin constantly, like bullets, and stung his face. He trudged, jeans and shoes soaked all the way through. He looked up for a split second, long enough to see a small glimmer of light that shone softly in the distance. The bus. He mustered up strength and ran, never loosening his grip on her body. As soon as he set foot on the bus steps, it felt like a huge load had been lifted off his back and set him free. The bus was quiet, everyone was asleep and the only sound you could hear was Kevin panting, gasping for air. He looked down at his girlfriend, she was out cold. Kevin ran his hand across her tear stained face. He held her in his arms and just sat there watching her, loving her, wishing he could make her pain go away. He leaned down to her and whispered in her ear, “I love you Lissie.” The clock ticked late into the night. No matter how hard he fought, Kevin couldn’t keep his eyes open. His eyelids were getting heavier and heavier with every moment that passed. His head was nodding and swaying and he couldn’t fight it any more. His body made up its mind, it had to sleep.
