Prologue
Jenna was running.
She wasn’t sure where she was going or where she would end up, but she was running. She heard footsteps pounding the pavement, running after her. She urged her legs to move faster. Years of playing soccer had paid off, and her strong legs carried her farther and farther away from what she had witnessed.
She knew he was chasing after her. Maybe he was even screaming her name. Yelling he was sorry. Yelling that he loved her. She didn’t care. She ran faster. Soon, the footsteps weren’t following her anymore.
What she had just seen had ripped her heart in half. Shook her to her very core. Crippled her spirit.
Hot tears slid down her cheeks as she rounded the corner of an unfamiliar street. She was in a city she didn’t know, alone. Her lungs were burning, and she was finally feeling the strain on her leg muscles. While she was running, she couldn’t feel the pain.
Her body finally gave up, and she slowed down. She started walking, and then finally collapsed on a bus stop bench. As soon as her mind caught up with the fact that she wasn’t gasping for air, she felt the pain rip through her chest.
The pain of betrayal.
The tears kept coming. But she didn’t sob or even utter a cry. They just leaked from her eyes and slid silently down her face. She stared blankly ahead, feeling the ache in her chest continue to throb.
Maybe I’m dreaming, she thought. Jenna slowly raised a hand to her face and felt the wetness from her tears.
Nope, definitely real.
With that realization, Jenna brought her legs to her chest. She sat on the bench, slowly rocking back and forth. Her mind buzzed with confusion, refusing to grasp onto a single thought.
The roaring engine of a motorcycle made Jenna’s head snap up. The motorcycle came to a screeching stop next to the curb just as the city bus pulled up. She rose to her feet as the figure got off the bike and took his helmet off. Long, dark locks spilled out from underneath the helmet. Worried brown eyes filled with…something- guilt, maybe- peered at her with urgency. He started to walk over to her.
Jenna watched him approach her. A lighting bolt of hurt and anger flashed throughout her body. On instinct to flee, she took two long steps to the curb and quickly boarded the bus. He ran after the shutting doors, and she yelled at the bus driver to drive. Without a word he pulled away.
She stared at him as they drove down the dark road. He was standing in the middle of the street, arms slumped at his side. She watched him until he was just a speck in the distance. Then she threw herself into a seat and leaned her head against the window.
She watched the unfamiliar city pass her by.
