Chapter One
“Drop the gun!”
The man just smiled at him and inched closer to the exit.
“I said, DROP THE GUN!”
A bead of sweat dripped down Sean’s forehead as he aimed his Glock at the smiling man.
“I’m warning you; take one more step and I’ll blow your *CENSORED*ing head off!”
The man’s smile faltered slightly. He shifted his eyes from Sean’s face, to the exit, then back to Sean once again.
Sean blinked the sweat from his eye and re-adjusted his gun. The two of them had been standing like this for a good fifteen minutes now.
“Come on,” Sean muttered under his breath. “Do something.”
Suddenly, the man bolted. He was headed for the exit.
“*CENSORED*.” Sean cursed. He took off running after the man, shoving his gun back in its holster. He then fumbled for the radio clipped to his chest.
“This is Agent Burns. Suspect is on the move, headed to the North Exit. I think he’s going to you, Kevin. I’m in pursuit.”
“Roger that. Agent Jonas ready.” Kevin replied.
Sean raced after the man, keeping him in sight. He was easily gaining ground on him.
But when he turned the corner into the main hall, the suspect was nowhere in sight.
Sean cursed again, grabbing his radio once more.
“This is Agent Burns again; I’ve lost sight of the suspect. Repeat, suspect is no longer in line of sight.” He dropped the radio, breathing heavily. He quickly scanned the hallway.
“Where are you…?” Sean whispered. This was a bank, for Christ’s sake, not a maze. There couldn’t be many places for one guy to hide. Sean took a tentative step forward, listening hard.
Then he heard it. The sound of a pin hitting the marble floor. Then, a small grenade rolled out at the end of the hall.
The blood drained from Sean’s face. Thinking quickly, Sean turned and ran for the huge bank vault he passed while chasing the suspect. That would have to do for now.
Just as he entered the massive vault, the grenade exploded.
The floor and walls shook with the force of the bomb. Money and other debris showered down from shelves and storage cabinets lining the vault.
Sean pressed himself up against the wall, praying that nothing would fall on him.
Then, as quickly as the rumbling quakes started, they stopped. Sean waited a moment before venturing back out into the hall.
It was a mess. There were chunks of marble and cement everywhere, and the entire hallway was filled with dust and debris.
Coughing, Sean picked his way forward, towards where the bomb exploded.
“Control to Agent Burns, do you copy?” Sean's radio crackled to life and Nick’s worried voice echoed into the empty halls.
“Agent Burns? Sean?” Nick repeated more urgently.
Sean grabbed his radio. “Yes, I’m here.” He replied
“What happened? Are you ok? It sounded like there was some kind of explosion.” Nick questioned.
“Yeah, it was a grenade. But I’m fine, don’t worry. And I don’t know where the suspect is.” Sean said, running a hand through his short brown hair.
“It’s fine. Look, don’t go in any further until we get the bomb squad in to check things out. Don’t worry about the suspect he’s probably…” Nick trailed off, uncertainly. But Sean knew what he meant to say. Dead.
Sean sighed and turned back towards the south exit where the whole ordeal started.
It began as a typical call. An easy one. Bank robbery. No hostages. Suspect believed to be armed. Funny how things could turn out sp differently than you pictured, even if you’d done it a hundred times before.
Sean stopped before he left the building. He grabbed a black hat from his belt and pulled it down low over his eyes. On the rim, it read: J.O.N.A.S.
He quickly stepped out into the cool, night air. Flashbulbs and video cameras were shoved in his face. Of course, the media had heard about the call.
“What happened in there?’
“Will you tell us your name?”
“How old are you?”
“We heard an explosion-”
“You look to young to be a special agent.”
Sean ignored the questions and shoved his way through the crowd towards an unmarked, black sedan, waiting on the sidewalk. The crowd of reporters followed him.
He climbed into the back seat of the car and slammed the door in their faces. The car sped away from the scene.
The driver looked at Sean in the mirror, with a concerned expression on his face.
“You ok buddy?” He asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks, Phil.” Sean sighed and stared out the window. He’d never had anyone die on a mission before. Not even by accident.
Several minutes later, the car rolled to a stop outside a simple office building.
“Here ya go. Take it easy, ok?” Phil said, smiling at Sean.
“Ok.” Sean gave him a small smile and stepped out of the car, pausing outside the door to the building. A key pad next to it blinked red.
Sean entered the code and walked inside, shutting the door behind him.
He’d entered the J.O.N.A.S headquarters. Inside, a secretary was typing away at a computer on a desk near the front door. Just behind her were several more desks with computers which were usually occupied by other agents. Everyone had already gone home for the night though.
“Hi, Tanya.” Sean waved to her as he walked by her desk.
“Hi Sean! How are you doing, can I get you anything?” She asked, half getting out of her chair.
“No, no I’m fine.”
“You sure? Water? Coffee?”
“No, its ok. Thanks, though. Are Kevin, Nick and Joe back yet?” He asked, pausing briefly.
“Yes, they just got in. They told me what happened. I’m sorry.” Tanya said sympathetically.
“Thanks.” Sean shrugged, heading for the back room where the meetings were usually held.
Joe, Nick and Kevin were already sitting around a large rectangular table, talking quietly when Sean entered the room. Joe stood when Sean walked in.
“Hey…” he trailed off.
“Rough night, huh?” Sean said, trying to make light of the situation.
“Yeah. Look, don’t beat yourself up about this, ok? It was just an accident. It was not your fault. The guy was pretty much committing suicide!” Joe said, sitting next to Sean and putting an arm around his shoulders.
“I know, I just can’t help but think that if only I’d-”
“There was nothing you could do, Sean.” Kevin said firmly.
Sean kept staring at the table, not saying anything.
“Let’s just forget about it for tonight, ok? It’s going to be an early morning tomorrow.” Nick said, standing up and stretching.
Sean looked up. “What do you mean?”
Nick raised his eyebrows. “We have school tomorrow, remember? Today was the last day of summer.”
Sean chuckled softly. “Oh yeah. I forgot about that.”
Joe and Kevin laughed too. They all stood up and walked to the parking lot outside together.
Joe stopped Sean before he got in his car.
“Seriously, are you going to be ok tonight?”
Sean smiled at him. “Of course. I’ll be fine.” He patted Joe on the shoulder. “Thanks.”
