All-American Girl
“I’m home!” Joe said as he walked through the doorway of his house.
“Hi, sweetie.” His wife greeted. She walked to the door and gently kissed him on the cheek.
“Come and sit down in the living room. I have something to tell you.” Mrs. Jonas said. He casually followed her into the den and sat down next to her on the couch.
“What did you want to tell me?” He asked.
“Honey…we’re going to have a baby.” She replied. He hugged her tightly, and almost cried.
Since the day they got married
He’d been praying for a little baby boy
Someone he could take fishing
Throw the football and be his pride and joy
“You know I’ve always wanted a little boy.” Joe said.
“Babe, you know we don’t get to choose.” She reminded him.
“Yes, but it would be great. We could play football, go fishing, and when he’s older, he’ll join the high school team and win the state championship.”
“Joseph. We don’t need to get carried away. What if the baby’s a girl?”
“You have a point. I’ll be happy no matter what it is.”
He could already see him
Holding that trophy
Taking his team to state
“You’re doing great, honey!” Joe said. Mrs. Jonas squeezed his hand even tighter.
“Push!” the doctor said.
“The baby’s out!” Another nurse said. They took the baby out of the room to clean it up.
“You ready?” Joe’s wife said.
“For what?” He replied.
“To be a father.”
“If I could manage millions of screaming girls when I was a teenager, then I’m pretty sure I can handle this.”
“Congratulations.” The doctor said. She walked in the room with the baby. Joe couldn’t help but stare at that little child wrapped up in the pink blanket.
But when the nurse came in
With a little pink blanket
All those big dreams changed
The tired mother held out her arms to receive the baby.
“What should we name her?” She asked.
“Crystal. Because she’s a diamond in the rough.” Joe replied.
“Want to hold her?”
“Sure. Why not?” Joe carefully picked up the little newborn girl. Suddenly, he forgot that his dreams had shattered before his eyes.
Now he’s wrapped around her finger
She’s the center of his whole world
And his heart
Belongs to that sweet little
Beautiful, wonderful, perfect All-American Girl
Crystal opened her locker to reveal tons of pictures of the senior football quarterback, Todd Redding.
16 short years later
She was falling for the senior football star
He was only a year older than her, so she figured she had a pretty good chance. She was also one of the prettiest girls in the school. Or at least that’s what her dad said.
“Hey, Crystal.” Her best friend said.
“Hey to you too.” She replied.
“Still dreaming about Todd?”
“Maybe.”
“I hear he likes you.”
“I hope so.”
------------------------------
“Let’s go, go ,go!” The football coach shouted at his players.
“Set, hut!” Todd said to his teammate, the center. The boy snapped the ball to
Todd. Redding backed up with the ball in his hand, got ready to throw it, then dropped it. He scrambled to throw his body on it before he lost possession.
Before you knew it
He was dropping passes
Skipping practice
Just to spend more time with her
“Redding!” The coach shouted. One of Todd’s teammates helped him up off the field, and Todd walked over to his coach.
“What is up with you lately? The fumbles [dropped balls], the missed practices? Are you out of your mind?”
The coach said hey son
What’s your problem
Tell me have you
Lost your mind
“No, sir.”
“Your father called me this afternoon. He said that if you keep this up, you’ll need to find a new ride to college.”
“But I--”
“You better tell her goodbye.”
Daddy said you’ll
Lose your free ride to college
Boy you better
Tell her goodbye
But now he’s wrapped around her finger
She’s the center of his whole world
And his heart
Belongs to that sweet little beautiful
Wonderful, perfect, All-American…
“I am so proud of you.” Joe said to his daughter. Today, Crystal was getting married.
“I love you, daddy.” She replied.
“I love you, too.”
And when they got married
And decided
To have one of their own
“Todd,” Crystal said.
“Yeah?”
“I know my dad wanted a little boy when my mom was pregnant with me.”
“Yeah, he told me that.”
“So honestly, tell me what you want, a boy or girl?”
“Honey do you really want to know?”
“Yes.”
“I want a little girl.”
She said be honest
Tell me what you want
And he said
Honey, you want to know
Sweet little beautiful
Oh just like him Oooh
Oh beautiful wonderful
Perfect All-American
Now he’s wrapped around her finger
She’s the center of his whole world
And his heart
Belongs to that sweet little
Beautiful wonderful
