The Sixteenth Wish
Chapter One: Nick’s Point of View
“Sweet Sixteen,
Gonna spread my wings,
Sweet Sixteen,
It‘s my chance to shine,
Sweet Sixteen,
Discovering,
So much more to life,
Sweet Sixtee..”
“Hello?” I said into the receiver of my iPhone that was blasting Hilary Duff’s voice into my ear, causing me to awaken from my sleep.
“Happy birthday little brother!” Joe‘s voice shouted at me from the other line. I closed my eyes and smiled.
“Thanks man. Oh and thanks for that nice new ring tone.” I said with a hint of sarcasm in my voice.
“Hey, you gotta love Hilary Duff.” Joe said and I just chuckled and rolled my eyes. “And I felt that it fit the day perfectly. How’s it feel to be sixteen?”
I thought for a second as I ran my free hand through my hair, scratching at my curl-covered scalp. “To be honest, not much different than how I usually feel.” I answered without much emotion.
“And how’s that?”
“I don’t know. Bored I guess.”
“Bored? Nick you’ve got to be kidding me, right?” Joe asked sounding kind of shocked, “Since when is being a rock star boring?” He added with a slight laugh.
“Since it’s always the same. I mean come on. We sing the same songs, hear the same screams, see the same fans, go on the same shows, hang with the same people… Joe it’s all the same!” I took a deep breath. I really was getting upset. Yeah, I love the fact that my brothers and I are living out dreams, but I just wish our dreams were open for some adjustments.
“Nick, calm down. You know what I think?” Joe asked me in a serious tone but I could tell he wouldn’t stay that way for long.
“What do you think?” I sighed.
“I think that someone’s just cranky because he’s becoming an old man!” He joked and I admit that it made me smile, a little.
“You do realize that you’re three years older than I am, so that makes you the old man.” I shot back at him with a laugh.
“Technically, that’s true. But I’m still a kid at heart while you, on the other hand, are three times as old on the inside as you are on the outside.” He said a matter-of-factly.
“You’re not making me feel any better, you know.”
“Sorry, you know I’m just kidding you, bro.” Joe apologized but he still sounded like I was entertaining him.
“Yeah, yeah I know.” There was a short, awkward silence until Joe spoke up again.
“How about me, you, and Kev head over to Pinkberry and get you a little birthday treat?” He suggested.
“Sure, why not.” I agreed and I could tell Joe was pleased with my answer.
“Okay cool. How about we leave in a half an hour?” He asked and I nodded even though he couldn’t see me.
“Alright, I’ll get ready now.” I said as I stood up from my bed. “Oh by the way, where are you at?” I asked and not even two seconds later Joe was standing at my door, cell phone pressed to his left ear and waving at me with his free hand.
“Right here.” He smiled and I laughed as I pressed my phone to end the call. “Ugh! You hung up on me. Jerk!” He exclaimed with fake anger in his voice. I rolled my brown eyes at him.
“Hey little kid, the old man is trying to get dressed in here. Can you excuse me for a minute?” I said trying to stay serious, and Joe just grinned.
“Yes sir.” He said as he shut my door.
