A Birthday Present
Prologue
I was seven. I was hiding behind the couch all alone, trying to ignore the screams. Trying to pretend mom and dad weren’t fighting, that’s when I heard my mom scream and she was gone forever, her corpse white and cold left on the floor. Then I heard my dad say my name. He had a gun, “Maddy,” he muttered. I took one last look at my mom and I darted for the door. My dad never caught me. A neighbor heard the gunshot, when the police got to my house they caught my dad and he was sentenced to death. There was nowhere for me to go. I’m currently seventeen, on my next birthday; I’ll be allowed to live on my own, away from the foster care. I’ll be on my own again.
3 Years Later
“Happy Birthday to me,” I said to myself. Today was my 20th birthday and I was working…again. I mean, you’d think with all of the crap that’s happened in my life I’d be…well depressed, but I’m not. I hold my head high and do what I can to make everything ok. I’m not a sad person. With my purple bangs hanging in my face, I looked at myself in the mirror. I was trying to see if anything had changed. Nothing had, I’d always just be me, even if it meant I was alone, I was ok with that. Sometimes I wondered what would happen if I wasn’t alone. As my thoughts carried me back to the front counter at the Star Bucks in New Jersey, my life changed, forever.
In they stepped three boys, their body guards just inside, blocking the door. No one could come in, no one could come out. It was just me and the Jonas Brothers now. I’d heard of them. They were famous musicians and they were pretty cool. After they ordered they stayed at the booth and asked me questions. I told them about my family and everything. I felt as if I could trust them. “Wow,” Kevin said, “That’s pretty sad, I’m sorry all of that has happened.” “Don’t be sorry,” I said, “I mean, it’s my past and yeah it’s sad, but it’s made me stronger. It’s helped me to see things in perspective.” “Can you hold on for one second?” Joe asked. “Um, sure, ok,” I said. I went back to cleaning off the counter. “This is for you,” Kevin said handing me a card. “Um, ok,” I replied, I seemed to be saying that a lot. “Call the phone number on there after you get off work today,” Nick said, “Please don’t give the number out, this is a very serious situation and I really think you’ll like the idea we have.” “Don’t worry, I won’t give it out, you can trust me,” I said, “I’ll be sure to call, thank you.” “Bye Maddy, see you soon,” Joe said and with that they were gone for a moment.
One Month Later
Sometimes sad situations end badly, mine didn’t. I was in my bunk of the bus. I had officially been on tour with the Jonas Brothers for one month now. They’d taken me in and changed my life. Kevin was teaching me to play the guitar, Joe and I were constantly pulling pranks, and Nick and I had an on-going rock band tournament. I didn’t feel so alone anymore. The Jonas family had taken me in the night of my birthday and it was the most unexpected present ever. I figured I’d just spend my birthday alone again, working, but I didn’t. Kevin, Joe, and Nick gave me a family, and it was the best present I could ever imagine. My positive attitude had paid off and finally something was right with my life.
