Forgotten
Part 1
“You may now kiss the bride” Josh said, with a cheeky grin as Kevin pinched his eyes shut along with Krista as they touched lips for a second before pulling back in various shades of pink.
“Okay! You’re married! Weddings over, lets go play!” Josh announced, as he and Ryan ran over to the playground. They were soon joined by Leanne, Fiona and Ray who started a game of tag. Kevin and Krista sat next to each other smiling shyly.
“So…I guess you’re my pretend wife now.” The seven year old said to Krista.
“Yup! I’ll be a good wife, promise.” She said, solemnly to him.
“Are you guys coming?” Ryan yelled, as everyone began to run off.
“Coming!” Kevin called back, brushing himself off. He helped Krista up, and then whispered into her ear. “One day, I’ll make you my real wife.” He said, with a small smile. Krista blushed but looked up at Kevin, her eyes sparkling.
“Really?” She asked. He nodded, with a grin. “Don’t forget.” She said softly, studying his cute face.
“I won’t, promise!” He said pecking her cheek before running off. Krista smiled to herself, one day she’d be in a white dress, not her play clothes, she’d be in a huge church, not a playground and he’d really be hers, till death do them part.
“Wait up!” She yelled out, and ran to catch up with them.
As much as the minutes of your life seem to go so slowly, the years can really pass. It was only three years later that Krista’s dad got a job in Los Angeles and she had to move. It was only a few years later that Kevin’s brother Nick got discovered, and soon after that their careers were jump started.
Was a little promise made on that bright Wednesday afternoon forgotten?
A 21 year old Krista drove her car down an LA street on the way to her friend’s house. She peered at her phone while she drove, looking up to suddenly see a bright red light blare at her. Flattening her foot on the brakes, her car halted to a stop. She lurched forward as she felt the car behind hit her.
“Oh great.” She said out loud, as she rolled her window down and motioned for the car behind her to pull over to the side. As she parked her car on the curb, she stepped out to view the damage and exchange insurance details with the other driver.
Krista walked around to the back, looking at the slight dint in the back of her car. She heard the other driver come up behind her and she heard a deep voice start talking.
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t listening…” She said, turning around, her eyes going wide as she saw him standing in front of her.
She looked him over, he’d certainly grown…taller. Kevin Jonas that boy who’d disappeared from her life 11 years ago, was suddenly standing right in front of her. The years had definitely gone by; she let her eyes glaze over him. He wasn’t some kid in a playground anymore; he was a world famous rock star in five thousand dollars worth of Dior.
“I was just saying the damage isn’t major, so it shouldn’t cost that much.” He said, with a warm smile.
She could hardly believe it; she’d spent the last few years constantly seeing his face on everything, his voice everywhere. How was her pretend husband from the second grade? Did he remember anything about her? More importantly did he remember his promise?
It seemed like a century ago that Josh Dilpat announced them husband and wife in their elementary school playground. They’d spent a years attached to each other, but once she moved, nothing. All was forgotten.
Until one day she stumbled upon them on the internet, she followed their success, watched him grow and grew to love him from afar.
It seemed strange, but it was true and now he was standing in front of her surveying her paint work.
“Look, here are my insurance details anyway.” Krista stated, forcing her eyes to move away from his flawless face.
“Nah, don’t worry I’ll cover it, I should have been at least two car spaces behind you.” He said reasonably. Krista shook her head; he didn’t recognise her at all. In the back of her mind she knew he wouldn’t. The last time they had seen each other, they were both ten and had an elementary school crush on each other.
So innocent and so forgettable.
“Look, I actually have to be somewhere in five minutes, so how about we just cover our own costs then.” He said, looking at his watch.
Krista sighed, as she pulled out a notepad from her purse, no this was her fault, she’d cover his costs, even though he was a millionaire. It hurt knowing he didn’t recognise her, and even though she told herself it didn’t matter, inside it really did.
She sat the notepad down on her car trunk and took a pen out; but before she could ask him for his insurance details he smiled at her.
“Sorry, of course!” He said, automatically taking her pen and signing his name with a flourish. Krista stared at his signature, he’d changed…but then again did she really know him?
She remembered the small boy making her a promise on a school playground, kissing her pink cheek and then running off.
She remembered holding his hand for the rest of the year, as their friendship continued to grow.
She remembered crying as she waved goodbye to him when school ended, knowing she wouldn’t see him anymore.
Maybe he’d changed, or maybe that boy was still inside of him…beyond the Dior and signatures.
Krista stared into Kevin’s hazel eyes wondering, and then she did something completely crazy. She leant forward and kissed him, her soft lips brushed against his as his eyes fluttered shut in surprise. Krista pulled back shaking her head, shocked by her actions, but her lips were tingling. Kevin just stared at her in shock, stunned by the kiss. She then took her pen up, and scribbled something on a sheet of the notepad, tearing it off and folding it in half.
“Here, Kevin.” She said quietly, pressing it into his palm, as he still stared at her in shock. She took her notepad and pen and went back into her car and without looking back she drove off.
Kevin watched the beautiful girl drive off, and then he looked at the folded paper pressed in his hand. Still staring into the distance he opened the note and then looked down.
