Chapter Five-
After everyone filed out of the church they headed to the Jonas’ house for the reception party. Becca and Kellie climbed into the rental car they were using for the week and drove all 10 minutes to the house. It was beautifully decorated and smelled of what must have been their dinner. They followed the crowd out to the backyard.
“Wow,” The two of them muttered as they saw the yard and the decorations. They saw Kevin and ran to his as fast as their heels would carry them.
“KEVIN!” They yelled as they practically tackled him to the ground.
“Hey!” He said laughing.
“Oh my God, congratulations!” Kellie said.
“Thanks,” He said giving each of them a hug, then they ran over to Rose and followed the same routine. Then Nick, Joe, Frankie, and Nicole came over and joined the circle. The eight of them stood in that same spot for a while, laughing and talking. Finally everything felt normal…until Amy came over.
“Hey babe,” She said leaning up to give Joe a quick kiss on the cheek. His face became very serious and he didn’t kiss her back.
“Joey, you okay?” She asked in a baby voice.
Oh not another one of those suck-up girlfriends. Becca thought. Joe nodded, without saying a word and continued listening to a story Nick was telling. After a few minutes of Amy playing with Joe’s hair and hugging him he exploded.
“AMY, CAN YOU STOP FOR LIKE, 5 MINUTES?! OR IS THAT TOO HARD?!” Everyone’s mouths dropped and they looked at Joe dumbstruck, Amy especially.
“Joe…wha…I’m sorry!” She couldn’t exactly find the words to say. Joe sighed and walked across the lawn to the tent with all the tables in it and disappeared inside the entrance. Amy stood there, mouth hanging open, in complete shook. The others all looked at each other not knowing what to do. The Nick spoke.
“So, who’s going to go talk to him?” He asked looking at Kellie. Kevin quickly offered but Nick pulled him back. He wanted Kellie to go.
“Anyone…” He said looking around then shooting Kellie a look saying “You have to do it!”
“I guess I will…?” Kellie asked instead of stating. Nick smiled and nodded.
“Yeah, you go,” He said as Kellie gave him a confused look and walked in the direction Joe headed. She walked into the tent and saw him sitting alone at a table in the back corner of the tent. Kellie made a bee-line for that table and pulled out a seat beside Joe.
“Hey,” She said quietly. Joe’s head shot up.
“Oh, hey,” He forced a smile.
“You okay?”
“Yeah…no, no I’m not.”
“Why not, does it have to do with Amy?” Kellie asked. Joe looked up from the table.
“Yeah, kind of,”
“Well, go on; tell me all about your boy problems.” Kellie joked. Joe laughed a little.
“Hey! Don’t make me laugh when I’m upset.”
“You haven’t changed one bit,” Kellie said lightly punching Joe’s arm.
“No, not really,” Joe said becoming serious.
“So really, what’s wrong Joe?”
“It’s been too long Kellie,” He said quietly and putting a hand on her cheek. He quickly leaned in closer to her face and stared into her eyes.
“I’ve missed you,” He whispered. Kellie felt a lump in her throat and she looked around to see if anyone had noticed what was going on.
“Joe…I missed you too, but…but we just got here, and it’s been a long time.” She shut her eyes and turned her head to the side. Joe sat back in his seat, he looked hurt.
“I’m sorry; it’s just that, over those years Joe, things changed.”
“You don’t…you don’t have a boyfriend, do you?”
“No! It’s just…this is a little fast for me, ya know?”
“I guess…I just really missed you Kellie, I don’t think I ever stopped feeling for you.” Joe said.
“Wow, Joe…um, I don’t know what to say.” Joe reached into a pocket on the inside of his tux and pulled out a long box, one that would hold a necklace or bracelet.
“Here, I want you to have this.”
“Joe, I can’t-“
“Take it.” He said sternly. Kellie looked down and slowly opened the box to see a silver necklace with a heart charm at the end. And on the heart, was a K…and a J. Kellie gasped.
“Joe, I thought you lost this necklace years ago!” She looked up, but when she did, Joe was gone. She turned around just in time to see Joe turn the corner, running out of the tent. Kellie was stuck sitting at that table feeling pretty dumbfounded.
Oh boy…
