"Allie," Kevin said, "Please come here. I want to talk to you." He sounded so sad and lonely that I couldn't imagine what was wrong.
I walked over to Kevin, sat down on the couch beside him and curled up in his arms.
"What's the matter, Kevvy?" I asked, concerned. He had never really turned to me with his problems before. No, not me, his little sister, but always his brothers. I felt so left out. I tried and tried to impress him with my singing talents, my guitar-playing, my straight-A report cards, my grade eight honours award. But none of that had gotten through to him. I just wanted to be accepted.
"My girlfriend broke up with me," Kevin whispered, cutting right to the chase. I was surprised. He was laying this on me? On the annoying, early teenage little sister? He wanted my help?
"Awww, I'm sorry Kevin," I replied earnestly, "What happened?"
"I don't know," Kevin said, still very quietly, "I think she thought I cheated on her."
I hugged him, and I could feel his warm tears on my neck.
"You really loved her, didn't you, Kev?" I asked.
"Yes, I did," he replied, "I don't understand."
And with that he let out a strangled sob.
I pulled away, surprised to hear him sobbing. My brother was strong, he never cried. Ever.
I took his face in my hands and looked into his pain-filled, glassy eyes.
"Kevin," I said, quietly, but very seriously, "If she really loved you, she'll know that you wouldn't do that to her. If she doesn't forgive you, you know she's not right for you. Someone who truly loves you will hear you out, no matter what."
After that, his face wore a look of surprise.
"Well, Allie," he said, "For a thirteen year old, you are very wise. You're right, she will hear me out, I hope."
And his tears ceased as he pulled me close.
"I love you, little sister," he whispered.
"I love you too," I replied.
Then, I knew, I had gained my oldest brother's love and respect, not by trying to impress him, but by simply speaking from my heart, and being there. I was accepted.
