chapter uno
“Amanda, where did you put the t-shirts?” Katie asked as she dug through Amanda’s bag, pulling out all sorts of things as she searched. “Amanda?”
Katie turned around to see that once again, Amanda had fallen asleep on the couch of the tour bus that they had been living on for the past month. Katie rolled her eyes as she pulled a pen out of her bag and tossed it lightly so that it landed right on Amanda’s face.
“Ouch,” Amanda said as her eyes shot open and she lifted her head up slightly, looking over in Katie’s direction to see her standing there with her hands on her hips. “What was that for?”
“Because this is the third time today I’ve had to wake you up,” Katie said. “Apparently someone had a late night.”
“We got to the hotel late, and then we had to get up to come to this venue place early,” Amanda said with a yawn as she sat up on the couch.
“We got to the hotel at like 1, and we got up at 9,” Katie said. “That’s 8 hours of sleep. Well, for me and Nick at least.”
“What are you implying Miss Brown?” Amanda asked Katie with a raised eyebrow.
“I’m implying that you’re a newlywed,” Katie answered simply. “And let’s not get into an argument about this and go back to the reason why I woke you up in the first place...where did you put those t-shirts?”
“They’re on your bunk,” Amanda answered. “With the fabric markers. Like I told you three times when we got on the bus earlier.”
“Yeah well I’m forgetful,” Katie said as she ran into the bunk room on the bus, and sure enough found a bag with 2 white t-shirts and a package of fabric markers. She grabbed them, and then ran back into the living room of the bus. “Okay, we only have like a half hour so we need to get these done quick.”
“Why do we only have a half hour?” Amanda asked, pulling out her cell phone and looking at the time. “It’s only 3, and their interview gets done at 3:45, and the sound check thing starts at 4:30. We have like an hour and a half.”
“Do I need to remind you of that time in Omaha where they refused to let us into the venue?” Katie asked as she dumped the contents of the bag onto the floor. “They thought we looked like fans trying to sneak in.”
“That was really funny,” Amanda said, laughing at the memory. “Especially when the guy didn’t believe me when I told him I was Joe’s wife.”
“He was pretty thick,” Katie said, shaking her head as she stretched out the t-shirt. “It’s a good thing we keep our passes now, instead of giving them to Joe to hang onto. But I still like to be there to meet them when they go in, just because it makes things a whole lot easier than trying to convince a security guard that we’re supposed to be there.”
“You’ve got a point,” Amanda conceded. “So we’re making these shirts...what exactly are we going to put on them?”
“I don’t know, I suck at being creative,” Katie answered with a shrug. “I thought you might be able to come up with something.”
“Katie, the shirts were your idea,” Amanda said. “I’m just going along with your plan because I think it will be funny.”
“Well you’ve gotta come up with something,” Katie said, furrowing her eyebrows. “And you have to have some sort of idea.”
“I have an idea, but it could be problematic if we are recognized tonight,” Amanda said.
“We have those sweet new sunglasses, so no one will figure out who we are if we wear them,” Katie assured Amanda. “So if your idea is mildly inappropriate, it will be okay.”
“Actually I was thinking we could make shirts that would make fun of all of the teenies there,” Amanda said with a chuckle. “You know, like, you could say ‘I caught Nick’s love bug again’ or some sh*t like that.”
“So basically we make the lamest shirts on the planet?” Katie asked, laughing.
“Well if you’re so hot on the inappropriate shirts idea, we could go with that too,” Amanda said. “I mean, I’ve always wanted to wear a shirt that says ‘save a tambourine, bang a Jonas.’”
“You would,” Katie muttered, shaking her head and uncapping a marker.
“I would wear a shirt like that, or I would bang a Jonas?” Amanda joked. “Because whichever you’re referring to, you’re right, I would.”
“As long as the Jonas you’re talking about is Joe,” Katie said. “Okay, so your shirt problem is solved, but what about mine?”
“Like I said, ‘I caught Nick’s love bug again’ is a valid option,” Amanda said, earning her an eye roll from Katie. “Or you could use mine, but substitute drum for tambourine.”
“Yeah but I’m not exactly banging a Jonas,” Katie said as Amanda began to write on her shirt with the pink fabric marker.
“Eh, close enough,” Amanda replied with a shrug. Katie laughed and began to write on her shirt too, and the two girls worked in silence for about ten minutes as they both tried to write on their shirts without messing up.
“I like it,” Amanda muttered as she finished the last letter of her shirt before capping the marker and tossing it next to her. She picked up her shirt and held it up, and Katie looked up and nodded her head in approval. “So what are we doing with these?”
“Bring your big purse and we’ll put them in there,” Katie said as she finished up the last word on her shirt. “Then right before the show starts we’ll sneak away and go up to our seats. You got the tickets, right?”
“Yeah, Big Rob hooked me up this morning,” Amanda said, pulling two tickets out of her back pocket. “Floor seats, first row, right on the end.”
“You know, there are a lot of girls out there who would sacrifice a lot of things for these tickets,” Katie said as she picked up all of the fabric markers off of the floor of the bus and threw them back in the bag.
“Yeah, well, those are the same girls who grab at my husband’s crotch every night when he’s performing,” Amanda said as she opened up her purse and put the two shirts into it. “So I don’t feel bad that we have these tickets and they don’t.”
“How do you really feel?” Katie asked with a laugh as she grabbed her cell phone off of the couch and they walked out of the bus together.
“Well those grabby mc grabbington slutty mc slut sluts can keep their hands off of my man,” Amanda said in a tone that told Katie she meant business. Katie tried her hardest to fight back a laugh, but it didn’t work, and she let a chuckle escape her lips.
“You laugh, but how would you feel if it was Nicholas’s crotch getting grabbed at every night?” Amanda asked, raising an eyebrow in Katie’s direction as they walked to the door outside of the venue where they would be meeting Nick, Joe and Kevin in a few minutes. Katie didn’t answer, to which Amanda responded with “exactly.”
Within a few minutes they had reached the side entrance to the venue, and outside was a black SUV. As the two girls approached the door opened, and out climbed Kevin and Stephanie, who had accompanied them to their interview earlier while Katie and Amanda elected to sleep on the bus. They were followed by Joe, and finally Nick.
“Hey baby,” Joe said, walking up to Amanda and wrapping his arms around her. He gave her a quick kiss before grabbing her hand and following Kevin and Stephanie through the open door into the venue.
“How was your nap?” Nick asked as he gave Katie a quick kiss on the cheek while they followed Amanda and Joe, and Big Rob followed behind them.
“I didn’t really sleep much, because I’m reading this really good book and it was just so intense,” Katie admitted, and Joe laughed quietly to himself in front of them as Amanda rolled her eyes.
“Well my nap was good,” Amanda said, turning around so that she was walking backwards and facing Nick. “That couch on the bus is quite comfortable.”
“I’m glad one of us thinks so,” Katie said, “but I really prefer a bed. That one at the hotel last night was prime. And the pillows were so soft, too.”
“You say that about every bed in every hotel we’ve stayed that on this tour,” Nick said as they walked into the arena where they would be playing, to see a fair number of men continuing to build the elaborate stage that they had set up.
“Well I’m just easy to please,” Katie said with a raised eyebrow in Nick’s direction. Nick opened his mouth to respond, but was quickly interrupted by Joe.
“So anyways, the sound check is early tonight, and then they’re ordering a bunch of pizzas for us for dinner,” he said loudly, glancing at his phone to check the time. “So we start up in a half hour, then we have our quick meet and greet, then dinner is at 5:30.”
“5:30?” Katie asked skeptically. “Amanda, I think we might be needing to go get some food during the show, because otherwise I’m not gonna make it through the night.”
“I think you’re right,” Amanda agreed, making knowing eye contact with Katie. “Maybe we’ll find an ice cream place or something.”
“And you’re going to miss the show?” Joe asked, pouting his lips slightly.
“Joey baby, we see you guys every night,” Amanda said, giving his hand a squeeze. “And plus, it’s not like there’s much to see from backstage anyways.”
“I guess you have a point,” Joe said. “But you’re still missing the show.”
“I’m sorry baby,” Amanda said, “but I’ll make it up to you later,” she added with a wink and a giggle. Joe leaned over to whisper something in her ear as the boys were called onto the stage to get ready for their sound check party, since they would soon be letting the fans into the building and they had to check their instruments before they allowed them in.
Katie, Amanda and Stephanie went back behind the stage to where there were many people running around, setting things up and getting things ready for the show later. The girls had invited Stephanie in on their plan for that evening’s show, but since she was leaving for a few days to visit her parents the next morning, she figured she should hang out backstage during the performance.
The three girls hung around out back through the whole sound check, and then afterwards went into a large room that they had brought a television, several couches, tables and chairs, as well as food. Katie immediately went over to the table with the food and grabbed a plate full of chips and salsa, along with a Gatorade out of the cooler, and then plopped down on her own couch and propped her feet up. She grabbed the television remote off of the table in front of her and flipped on Sportscenter while Amanda and Stephanie each got some food and sat down on couches as well.
Within an hour, the boys had returned from their meet and greet, and the rest of the band, along with some of the set up crew, had joined the girls in the room with all of the food. They had just gone through over 20 boxes of pizza, and everyone was getting ready for the actual show as the venue was filling up above them.
“Hey Amanda, I think we should go find someone to give us directions to an ice cream place so we don’t get lost,” Katie said, glancing at her cell phone and seeing that it was almost 7 and almost time for the show to start.
“I like that idea,” Amanda said, lifting her legs off of Joe’s lap and swinging them off of the couch they were on. She stood up and walked a few steps towards Joe, and leaned down and kissed him quickly. “Good luck tonight, babe. Don’t fall and break anything. And don’t jump too low when you’re--”
“I know, avoid the microphone stand when I’m jumping,” Joe said with a grin. “You tell me every single night.”
“I’m just stressing that it’s important you don’t hurt yourself,” Amanda said, giving him another peck on the lips. “I’ll see you after,” she said with a wink, before turning and walking towards Katie and Nick.
“So I’ll meet you on the bus after?” Nick asked.
“Something like that,” Katie said with a shrug, giving him a quick kiss for luck before joining Amanda as they walked out of the room together. As soon as the door had shut behind them, they quickened their pace as they walked down the hallway.
“So basically we have to find some way upstairs three floors,” Katie said as Amanda pulled the shirts and sunglasses they had stashed in her purse. As they walked down the hallway they found a bathroom, and the two girls quickly ran into it and took off the shirts they were wearing, pulling their new ones on.
“I bet this would be good to be spotted in by some paparazzi,” Amanda said as she pulled her hair back away from her face, before sliding on her sunglasses and checking out her look in the mirror.
“Yeah, almost as great as if they saw me wearing my shirt,” Katie said as she pulled her hair back into a ponytail. “At least everyone knows you and Joe have sex all the time. But Nick’s girlfriend...wearing a shirt that insinuates banging him...”
“It’d give them something to blog about for weeks!” Amanda exclaimed with a laugh as they both looked in the mirror one last time before walking out of the bathroom and into the elevators across the hallway that would take them up to the floor where they needed to be. As soon as they reached the third floor up, then pulled off their lanyards that had their backstage passes on them and slipped them into Amanda’s purse. They walked through a door and joined the dwindling crowd of people standing next to a merchandise table.
“Come on, I can hear music,” Amanda said, and Katie and her quickly walked into the arena, where there were thousands of teenage girls screaming their heads off as the opening act played on the stage. They walked down what seemed like dozens of flights of stairs before reaching the floor, where their seats were. They showed their tickets to three different people through the course of making it to their seats, making sure they were careful to keep their sunglasses over their eyes and their heads down as they walked past huge groups of teenage girls.
“Finally,” Katie yelled over the loud music that pulsed through the arena. “Finding these seats was a workout. Get me that Gatorade I put in your purse.”
“You stashed a Gatorade in my purse?” Amanda asked as she opened it up and sure enough, saw a half empty blue Gatorade bottle in there. Katie grabbed it out of her hands as she pulled it out.
“I knew I’d get thirsty,” Katie said as she opened it and took a swig of the liquid inside, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand afterwards. “I almost put some food in there, but I figured you’d get mad at me if there were crumbs.”
“You’ve got that right,” Amanda said as her and Katie swayed to the beat of the music. Within a few minutes the band was done, and the stage was going through the nightly change so that the Jonas Brothers could begin their show. Katie and Amanda sat in their chairs waiting patiently as the girls around them chatted loudly and excitedly, waiting to see the boys take the stage.
“You know, let’s remind Nick and Joe that the message screen is a horrible idea,” Katie said quietly to Amanda in between the screams that traveled through the arena as another ‘scream if you love Jonas’ message popped up.
“I think that’s a great idea,” Amanda said as the lights suddenly went down in the arena, and the screams of thousands of girls shook the building as the tune to ‘We Will Rock You’ started to play. Amanda and Katie looked at each other and laughed as the girls behind them and next to them screamed as loud as they possibly could while the opening chords to Paranoid started playing. The two girls looked up, knowing that the boys were being lowered onto the stage this time around, and sure enough a large platform appeared to be coming down from the ceiling as lights flashed all around.
As Nick began singing the opening lines to the song, so did almost every other girl in the arena, and they sang along with him to every word. Katie and Amanda found themselves joining in once Joe began to sing his part, and soon they were dancing and singing along to the music just like everyone else.
“We should’ve done this a long time ago,” Katie yelled over the screams at the end of the song. “This is way better than backstage.”
“You think?” Amanda yelled back. “So when do we let them know we’re here?” She continued as the tune of Hold On started to play, and screams echoed through the arena.
“Let’s wait a song or two,” Katie said. “And when Joe comes over here, just lift up your sunglasses. Then look down at your shirt.”
“Good plan,” Amanda said, before the two girls began to sing along to the words of the song again. They did the same through Hold On and Hey Baby, and soon the tune changed over to BB Good.
“I think we should do it during this song,” Katie yelled as Joe began to walk towards their side of the stage, singing the opening verse of the song. “He’s coming, so get ready!”
Joe walked over to their side of the stage, where Amanda and Katie were standing with wide smiles on their faces, singing along. Joe walked right in front of them, stopping about three feet away and looking down at the crowd as he sang. Amanda lifted up her sunglasses so that her eyes were visible as Joe swung his head around and looked right at her.
“You’ve gotta BB Good to--” Joe began, stopping suddenly as he made eye contact with Amanda and she smiled. His eyes widened in shock for a moment as she laughed and looked down at her shirt, while Nick and Kevin continued to sing the background vocals to the chorus in confusion. Joe followed her eyes down to her shirt as she pulled her sunglasses back down over her eyes, and he began to laugh as he read what her shirt said before continuing with his singing. “We’ll be happy as can be, just gotta BB Good to me, baby.” Joe continued to laugh to himself as he looked at Katie’s shirt, before turning his back on them and walking over to the other side of the stage to continue with the song.
“That was awesome!” Katie yelled, high-fiving Amanda as Joe sang the second verse to the song.
“He was totally confused,” Amanda said as she laughed. “And then the shirts.”
“It was just priceless,” Katie said as the chorus of the song picked up again and they continued to sing along. As the song ended, Joe over to where Nick was playing his guitar and pulled his microphone away from his face for a second to whisper something into Nick’s ear. Then they both turned and looked over where Amanda and Katie were standing, and Katie blew Nick a kiss, which the young girls surrounding them were completely oblivious to. Katie and Amanda giggled as they watched Nick blush while Joe walked away, and the band began to play the chords to World War III.
“Yes, my favorite song,” Katie said as she began to move to the beat of the song. Amanda laughed at her and rolled her eyes as Nick walked in their direction while playing his guitar.
“Tonight I walked into the bedroom,” Katie sang loudly in unison with Nick, and all of the other girls in the arena as well. Through her sunglasses she made eye contact with Nick and he winked at her while he continued singing.
“Oh my God, he just winked at me!” The girl behind Katie screamed loudly right in Katie’s ear as Nick looked away, continuing to sing. Katie bit her lip as she looked over at Amanda, who was already laughing uncontrollably. Katie joined her in a fit of laughter as Nick walked back towards the other side of the stage.
“Best night of the tour so far?” Amanda asked loudly, and Katie nodded as she sang along loudly, and Amanda joined in, as the two girls enjoyed the rest of the show.
